808T E.116 - Annexation of Hawaii
109 years ago today the sovereignty of Hawaii was formally transferred to the United States at ceremonies at Iolani Palace on Aug. 12, 1898. Sanford Dole spoke as the newly appointed governor of the Territory of Hawaii and the Hawaiian anthem, Hawaii Ponoi, with words written by King Kalakaua, was played as the Hawaiian flag was lowered, and replaced by the American flag and the playing of The Star-Spangled Banner. This was the day that the Hawaiian people had lost their land, their monarchy and now their independence — Pat Pitzer. Learn more in the show and visit our links in the notes. As always, remember we love to hear from our wonderful 808Talk listeners so be sure and leave us a comment.
