Princess Ka’iulani Filming Begins With Outrage
Just a few weeks ago filming for a new movie about the life of Princess Ka’iulani began in Honolulu with further filming to begin in England. The film will star Q’orianka Kilcher, who co-starred as Pocahontas in the 2005 film “The New World”, and 12-year-old Kaimana Pa’aluhi of Oahu as Princess Ka’iulani.
Only days into the filming and already it’s drawing the attention of small groups who are outraged at the movie’s proposed title “Barbarian Princess” which was changed last weekend in an effort to ease tensions. The $9 million film now is titled “The Last Princess.” Other complaints include the use of ‘Iolani Palace as a filming location, non-Hawaiian actors portraying Hawaiians and the believed to be non-Hawaiian interpretation by English director Marc Forby of the life of Ka’iulani.
The setting of the movie begins in 1888, as the Hawaiian kingdom faces the threat of civil war and Princess Ka’iulani travels to England for safety. After Hawai’i’s overthrow in 1893, the princess returned to Hawai’i to seek restoration of the monarchy.
