Make Me Look Fabulous: Honolulu’s Philipson Photography

Joe Philipson Photography

A great photo isn’t poked and prodded into existence. If it were, I wouldn’t look all squinty-eyed and plastic in the posed photos of me as a bridesmaid hanging on my walls. Yuck.

I’ve long suspected that the best photos are snapped at the spur of the moment. It’s the difference between a photo being a representation of a moment in time and actually catching the essence of that moment. Local photog Joe Philipson proves me right. His stylish work captures life just happening, but with a little bit of polish to make you look fabulous.

Specializing in on-location photography, Joe makes pictures of people doing what comes naturally. As he shows me his portfolio, I get the feeling he’s successful because he acts more like a trusted friend than a photographer. He explains how he puts newlyweds at ease and tries to recede a little into the background so they’ll act naturally and just “be in love.” Or how he’ll play with kids to get a lively, youthful moment on film.

The results are chic snapshots that look like they belong in a Calvin Klein ad. I’m serious. Don’t believe me? Check out his work at www.philipsonphotography.com. You’ll be impressed. I was.

Oh, and another cool thing about Joe is he doesn’t price based on time. You just talk to him about what you want and he gives you a price. He’ll stay until he gets the shot. A perfect antidote to the hustle and rush of “normal” photography.
