In The Beginning – The Breath of Life

Ulupau Crater

One day the gods Ku (god of war), Lono (god of agriculture and fertility), and Kanaloa (god of sea and the underworld), were playing at the crater of Ulupau, which is currently the Kaneohe Marine Corps Base. From the dust of the earth, they fashioned the shape of man during play. They bid man to rise from the dust and to walk the earth. However, no matter what they did they could not get man to rise out of the dust. Then came Kane, the gentle loving god of all. Kane saw the shape of man fashioned from the dust of the earth. Kane knelt gently next to the figure of man and blew the breath of life into man’s nostrils. That is the story of man in the Hawaiian culture.
