About the artists:

Five-time Grammy winner, humanitarian, singer, songwriter, producer and reggae icon Ziggy Marley has released twelve albums to much critical acclaim. The eldest son of international music legend Bob Marley, he first achieved worldwide success with his first solo album, ‘Dragonfly,’ followed up by his 2006 Grammy-winning album ‘Love is My Religion’ and his third solo album, ‘Family Time,’ which scored him a fifth Grammy Award for Best Children’s Album. On April 20, 2011, Ziggy released his first graphic novel, titled ‘MARIJUANAMAN,’ and continues down the creative path with his most recent album, the Grammy-nominated ‘Wild and Free,’ released on June 14, 2011. For more information, visit www.ziggymarley.com.

Joining Ziggy Marley will be legendary Jamaican reggae band Inner Circle, formed in 1968 and currently consisting of Ian Lewis (bass guitar, vocals), Jr. Jazz (vocals, guitar), Bernard “Touter” Harvey (keyboards, vocals), Lancelot Hall (drums, percussion) and Roger Lewis (guitar, vocals). During the 1970s, Inner Circle became one of the most popular reggae bands in Jamaica, and one of few that performed live. Among their many hits is the 1987 song “Bad Boys”, the theme song for Fox Network’s long-running television program “COPS.” For more information, visit www.innercircle-reggae.com.

With true international recognition, Lani Misalucha will grace Waikiki with her outstanding vocal talents as well as her incredible presence. Starting December 20, 2011, Lani Misalucha Show will be held in the Magic of Polynesia Showroom at the Holiday Inn Waikiki Beachcomber Resort, 2300 Kalakaua Avenue, Honolulu, Oahu, HI 96815 (Map) starting at 8:30 pm for this special engagement. This will be an opportunity for Lani Misalucha fans to be up close and personal with the performer as this show will be more intimate than any of her other shows. Lani Misalucha has a truly warm persona that will engulf her audience and captivate them throughout the entire show.

“I am looking forward to performing in Waikiki again, I have been to Hawaii several times and I just love its people and its diverse cultures,” shares Lani Misalucha. “This is a wonderful opportunity because I will be able to share what I love best with my local fans and the many visitors from all over the world. It is also very exciting to be working with new people for this show as well as to work with Roberts Hawaii.”

This special engagement show is definitely a must-see this holiday season and through the New Year as Lani Misalucha captures her audiences with her strong, pitch perfect voice as well as by her presence on stage that can mesmerize everyone in even the largest of crowds. Lani Misalucha Show will be fast paced and have an inviting selection of her signature songs mixing both glitz and glamour in a unique and colorful one-woman show. It must be remembered that Misalucha’s vocals are nothing shy of those of Celine Dion, and like Dion, Misalucha will deliver everything that the show promises.

Lani Misalucha Show will cover a vast assortment of musical styles, from R&B to opera to classic rock, and demonstrates Misalucha’s true abilities as a singer and performer. Audiences will enjoy her comedic flair and amazing vocal range shine as she performs her impersonations of Britney Spears, Tina Turner, Diana Ross, Celine Dion and Beyonce. The showroom will be filled with energy, enthusiasm and power throughout the entire show. A show like the Lani Misalucha Show is not about the stagecraft but rather the personality and talent of Misalucha that regularly brings audiences to their feet. Honolulu’s best musicians and singers will back up her award-winning solo act. Audiences will have the opportunity to experience this international star up close and personal in the intimate setting of the Magic of Polynesia Showroom.

Percy Higashi, President of Hawaii’s premiere promoter, Roberts Hawaii shares, “Thanks to Roy Tokujo’s efforts, we are thrilled to be able to bring a show of such incredible caliber to Waikiki. Lani Misalucha is an amazing vocalist and entertainer with devoted fans worldwide. I think she is going to ‘wow’ everyone who comes to see her show during this special engagement.”

Lani Misalucha

Misalucha’s career began at the age of 17. In 2004, Lani became the first Asian female performer to headline Las Vegas. She has been called “Siren of the Strip” by Show Biz Magazine on their cover and “The New Diva of Las Vegas” by What’s On Magazine. Her ability to sing/perform in all of these different styles has made her one of the most popular vocalists in Asia (dubbed as Asia’s Nightingale by MTV Asia). In March 2008, Misalucha was voted “Best Singer” in the “27th Annual Best of Las Vegas” by the Las Vegas Review Journal. This puts her in the same sentence as super-diva Celine Dion, the readers pick for “Best Singer.” As in San Francisco on August 17th, Las Vegas Mayor has declared December 4th “Lani Misalucha Day” to celebrate her talent. The list of her accomplishments and accolades is far too extensive to be shared in its entirety. From the Philippines to Canada to all over the United States, Misalucha has developed a following that has responded to her warm and delightful personality as well as to her incredible talent that she continues to develop with every endeavor that she engages in.

Lani Misalucha Show only tickets are available at $55 for general seating and $65 for a limited number of preferred seats. A kama’aina discount of 20% is also available. For more information about pricing, packages and to purchase tickets for Lani Misalucha Show, please visit http://www.LaniInWaikiki.com.

This is a show not to be missed. Lani Misalucha is a talent not to be missed. This special engagement will run from December 20th through March. The show provides audiences a Vegas style night out in Waikiki filled with world-class entertainment and, best of all, an International Star.

O Ka’u Kakou proudly announces the first annual Ka’u Family Fun Fest on Saturday, June 11, 2011 at Na’alehu Park on Hawai’i Island. Online registration and event details are now available at race360.com/15811.

Known as “The Southernmost Goodwill Games in the USA”, this unprecedented event features a Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races, and a variety of athletic tournaments for all ages. Bay Clinic, a network of nonprofit community clinics, has been named the beneficiary of this summer fundraiser with proceeds going toward the construction of a new Ka’u Family Health Center.

This event promises to be a memorable experience for runners of all ages and abilities. The race course traverses an old historic “Cane Field Road” in Ka’u, once used for hauling sugar cane to Na’alehu and Pahala sugar plantations. Offering one of the most scenic views of the Big Island’s southern coast, the route encompasses over 30 miles of breathtaking coastal landscapes from mauka to makai (mountain to sea).

Following the race, athletes will demonstrate their skills and compete for prizes in archery, basketball, Jan Ken Po, a hunter’s obstacle course and Portuguese horse shoe tournaments. Live music and entertainment, a live auction with Mayor Billy Kenoi, food and vendor booths, a health expo and a number of children’s activities will be also featured.

Early registration ends May 11, 2011 (today) with the next registration deadline being set for May 31st where entry fees will be raised on a tiered fee schedule. The Half Marathon fee before May 11th is $45, before May 31st will be $50, before June 10th will be $55, and on June 11th will be raised to $60. The other races and tournaments have similar price increases on each deadline. Event information and updates can be found at okaukakou.com, bayclinic.org , on Facebook (Kau Family Fun Fest) and Twitter (@KauFamFunFest).

The Ka’u Family Fun Fest will be marketed heavily both locally and internationally, offering significant media exposure for participating sponsors and community leaders. Contact race director Raylene Moses at (808) 235-8251 or kaufamilyfunfest [at] gmail.com for information on volunteer, sponsorship and vendor opportunities.

Pacific Roller Derby invites fans to witness a smorgasbord of rollergirls dressed as Cavegirls and Ravegirls in a colorful scrimmage in the ‘cage’ at the USCG Hideaway Club at Barber’s Point at 4pm this Saturday, May 14. The league’s veteran skaters welcome the newest derby girls as they make their debut on the flat-track. Adair Ya-To!, Lil’ Red Righthook, Charm School Her, Prett E. Solid, Miss Behavin’, Kuchi, Ghostface Killer, Loonatic Loocy, CrackHer Jackie, Total Jen-o-cide, and Megan Havoc are the latest rollergirls to successfully pass the minimum skills tests as required by the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association, the international governing sports body for women’s flat track-roller derby. Interested men and women are encouraged to contact the league to learn about on-going training opportunities to join Oahu’s roller derby ‘ohana as a rollergirl, referee, non skating official, or volunteer.

Fans are invited to dress in costume to support their team of choice, and are encouraged to bring a change of clothes for the post-bout slip and slide races. For a door charge of $7 for the general public ($5 with valid military ID), fans can look forward to live roller derby, snacks and a bake sale, live music and the opportunity to join the derby girls in an afternoon of fan-appreciation field day games, relays, and races after the on skates action. All funds raised support Pacific Roller Derby’s efforts to purchase a sport court so they can find an indoor venue to call home, and the organization’s operating expenses. Pacific’s Hideaway scrimmages are family friendly events through 8pm when it becomes an 18+ event. Doors open at 3:30pm and the first whistle blows promptly at 4pm at the caged tennis courts at the USCG Air Station’s Hideaway Bar, at 1 Coral Sea Street. Fans without a military ID must RSVP at www.pacificrollerderby.com by 5pm on Friday, May 13, for entry onto the base, or must be sponsored by a military ID holder. For further questions and inquiries, and to learn more about the Pacific Roller Derby or how to become involved with Oahu’s premier roller derby league, fans are encouraged to visit www.pacificrollerderby.com.

ABOUT PACIFIC ROLLER DERBY:

In 2008, Pacific Roller Derby (Pacific) brought the excitement of roller derby back to Honolulu, Hawaii. The all female flat-track roller derby league has showed fans what it means to push one’s self to their highest potential and form a strong community around one of the world’s fastest growing female dominated sports. As members of this league we continue to keep the enthusiasm alive and spread the derby love. In 2009, Pacific became a member of the Women’s Flat Track Derby Association (WFTDA). WFTDA promotes and fosters the sport of women’s flat-track derby by developing athletic ability, sportswomanship, and goodwill among member leagues. Pacific is excited to learn about local sponsorship opportunities and about local venues to call home for their on-skates events so they may continue to spread roller derby’s popularity around the island. For more information, visit www.pacificrollerderby.com.

Honolulu steps up again and joins in the global charity event called Twestival which uses social media to bring together people in support of global good. 2009 marked the first year of Twestival Global and Honolulu kicked it off with an amazing turnout in support of Charity Water. 2010 took us into year two of Twestival Global in which Honolulu aided in providing much needed funds for Concern Worldwide who was also one of the first on the ground in Haiti after the earthquake that took place in early 2010. This year, the third year of Twestival, allows for each Twestival city to pick a local charity to benefit from social media for local good. The Honolulu team has come together once again to bring you an enjoyable social gathering to bring aid to this year’s charity, a local charity, which is the Blood Bank of Hawaii, a lifesaving non-profit organization that provides blood products to 11 civilian hospitals on Oahu and eight civilian hospitals on the neighbor islands.

This year’s Twestival will take place at The Venue, one of the hottest live music spots during First Friday, only on a Thursday. And the lineup features beatbox and dance performer Jason Tom, renown dancer and singer Willow Chang, musician and producer Kamuela Kahoano (son of Kimo Kahoano), and singer songwriter Emi Hart.

There will also be complimentary pupus, free swag, and prize giveaways.

Ticket sales are the primary fundraising channel for Twestival, with one hundred percent of monies going to charity. Once again, tickets for Honolulu Twestival are available online for $20 in advance, or $25 at the door. The event is made possible through the support of sponsors, like Farmers Insurance Hawaii and Hawaii Aloha Travel, and a team of dedicated volunteers.

Honolulu Twestival organizers join the world in expressing support for the victims of the devastating earthquake and tsunami in Japan that occurred on March 11th, 2011, and attendees will be encouraged to make special donations to the Hawaii Red Cross. But while the global community holds its breath watching the crisis unfold overseas, the need to sustain the local blood supply never subsides.

What is Twestival?

“On Thursday March 24, 2011, people in hundreds of cities around the world will come together offline to rally around the important cause of supporting a local charity in their city by hosting local events to have fun and create awareness. Twestival (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good. All of the local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to local recipients. Follow @twestival for global updates or @hitwestival for local Honolulu updates.“

SQLSaturday is a training event for SQL Server and Developer professionals wanting to learn about SQL Server and other emerging technologies. This event will be held April 1, 2011 at PCATT at Honolulu Community College, Bldg 2 (Map). Admittance to this event is free, but we do charge a lunch fee of 10.00 so that we can provide a lunch – not pizza! Please register soon as seating is limited, and let friends and colleagues know about the event.

Wanna know more? The best way to learn more about SQL Saturday and SQL Saturday Honolulu is straight from the words of the organizer Karla Landrum.

Posted: January 13, 2011

April 1st will be the first ever Hawaiian SQL Saturday in beautiful Honolulu. Not only is the first SQL Saturday for the islands there, but it is also the first SQL Saturday in history to be held outside of the mainland (notice I didn’t add USA to that, as there is an event happening in Vancouver on Feb 26th). Special thanks to Jeff Bloom, one of the crew of the .NET Users Group there in Hawaii for locking down the venue, Honolulu Community College, which has so generously offered the venue for FREE for our event, SWEET!

Now I know by now you are already looking at the calendar and saying, “What, a SQL Saturday on a Friday?” Yes, we had to concede to a Friday event primarily for two reasons. The HCC only has security until 2:00 on Saturdays, and the bigger reason, they turn off the air conditioning in the buildings at noon. (Plus there is the argument that who would want to give up a Saturday in Hawaii!). If you know your SQL Sat history, then you know this won’t be the first SQL Saturday held on a Friday. SQL Saturday #58 was held on a Friday in Minnesota and had a turnout of over 200, so we are confident that a Friday event will do well. And besides, what better reason to ask for the day off from work…free training that benefits their companies, what employer would say no to that. With what sounds like to be the most expensive place to live, free training should be welcomed by these employers there.

Now you are also probably realizing that there are two other SQL Saturdays happening that weekend, Boston and Dallas. We really did try to avoid this weekend, not because we felt there would be conflict for attendees, but for those who had already expressed interest in speaking at Hawaii’s event. But unfortunately we had to go with what we could get, so we realize we will lose some great speakers to these other two events as those locations will of course be more cost effective for them. Luckily this date did work out for Buck Woody (blog|twitter), as he is presenting a full day pre-con for us the day before the event.

For those still interested in presenting in Honolulu, note, there will only be 3 tracks. Two devoted to SQL and one devoted to Developers. For those traveling over, we will do our best to give you at least two timeslots, so if you do register to speak, please post up more than one abstract. For speakers being sent by a sponsor of the event, we will guarantee you at least two timeslots. We of course are very interested in local speakers. If you are local to Hawaii and are interested in speaking, please register on the website, but also DM me on twitter (@karlakay22). Sponsors, we will have the sponsorship details posted over the weekend. We plan to make it very affordable for our sponsors, as we hope that you will consider actually coming over or sending someone to represent your company.

Time to get cranking on the website! Hope to see some of you there!

Mahalo!

The opening of the new Pearl Harbor Visitor Center is also the final reunion of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association. The group returns to Hawaii every five years. Membership in the group, chartered by Congress, is dwindling as members advance in years. For those who remain, traveling to Hawaii is physically taxing. The group decided to make this reunion the last gathering in Hawaii.

Membership is open to active military who were on duty and survived the Pearl Harbor bombings 69 years ago on December 7, 1941. National and state chapters are run by members who are all in their late 80′s or over 90 years of age. The national Pearl Harbor Survivors Association is considering disbanding due to low membership and workload on remaining members.

The Virginia Pearl Harbor Survivors Association thrives for now. Meet two Virginia Beach members of the Pearl Harbor Survivors Association who traveled to Hawaii for this year’s reunion.

Bill Temple, president of the state chapter is returning to Hawaii for the first time since his tour of duty in the 1940′s. At 91 years young, Bill is sharp as a tack and keeps a schedule that would tire someone half his age. He is joined on the trip by his daughter Joan.

Its unique quality, dazzling performance and classic beauty; Cirque Wings is the jewel of performing arts.
“From ancient times to modern days the passion to fly has followed us in our dreams for centuries,” explains Ivo Gueorguiev, director of The New Cirque. “Cirque Wings will take you on a magical journey of the history behind flight. I want to present a show to the community of Honolulu that we can all relate to.”

TRAIN will headline “Star 101.9′s Band Camp 8” and make their Hawaii debut on Dec. 2, 2010 at Blaisdell Arena.

Internationally-known guitarist ORIANTHI (who appeared with Michael Jackson in “This Is It”) and Hawaii-based bands THE THROWDOWNS and PIMPBOT will open the event, which is being produced by Tom Moffatt Productions. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the show begins at 7 p.m.

Grammy award-winning TRAIN’s fifth album, “Save Me San Francisco,” features the hits “Hey, Soul Sister,” and “If It’s Love.” “Hey, Soul Sister” is the No. 1 most downloaded song in Columbia Records history and was certified quadruple Platinum by the RIAA as of July 14, 2010. The album has sold more than 500,000 copies.

At 24 years old, ORIANTHI has already experienced what most aspiring musicians only dream of. She’s opened for her hero (Steve Vai), backed an Idol (Carrie Underwood), traded solos with a legend (Carlos Santana) and shared the stage with the King of Pop (Michael Jackson). The world was offered a glimpse of her collaborative performances with Jackson in “This Is It,” the movie that included footage from his last concert tour rehearsals.

Orianthi

Press Photo’s Courtesy: Tom Moffatt Productions & Pitch Engine

THE THROWDOWNS released their debut album, “Don’t Slow Down,” last year and have shared the stage with a variety of bands including The Fray, Matisyahu, Bad Brains, Panic at the Disco, 311, NOFX, the English Beat and others. The Maui-based group is making their second Star 101.9 Band Camp appearance.

PIMPBOT, Hawaii’s DIY-heroes, have taken their original brand of rock/reggae/ska bangers from the shores of Waikiki to the world. The Na Hoku Hanohano (Hawaii’s Grammys) nominated rock band was a featured showcase artist at Austin’s South By Southwest Music Festival and recently completed a tour of Asia & the Pacific Rim sponsored by Armed Forces Entertainment.

Get those Harleys ready for the December 5, 2010 Street Bikers United Toys for Tots parade in Honolulu, Hawaii. Four to five thousand riders are expected to make the four mile route beginning at Magic Island and ending at Kapiolani Community College. Participants from several Hawaiian Islands, Japan and other counties are expected.

The event is sponsored by Street Bikers United Hawaii and advanced registration is not required. Gates open at 7AM and the ride begins at 11AM lasting about an hour .All motorcycle riders and their bikes are welcome. A $2 donation is requested to help defray costs for permits, traffic control and insurance.

I spoke to Ray Pagon, State Treasurer for Street Bikers United Hawaii. He asked me to remind riders to be considerate of our neighbors and tourists alike. He encouraged riders to obey all speed limits and discourages revving engines to reduce complaints. This ride brings in over 10,000 toys to boys and girls and he does not want to see the event closed down.

For more information, contact event manager Ray Pagan. Here is a look at last years parade: 2009 Toys for Tots Biker Parade Waikiki.

Not I, is an official selection of the Hawaii International Film Festival for its 30th season held at the Regal Dole Cannery Theatres. On Sunday October 24th at 2:15pm, Not I will screen as part of the Pacific Panorama Shorts, and it is also nominated for the Best Local Shorts Award.

Written and directed by Misa Tupou, Not I ventures into the world of a violent man. Or is he? From a deep sleep he awakes to discover an abusive act on a woman. This forces him to choose, whether to help or not. His indecisiveness mirrors a familiar reality that perhaps he has lived this moment from a previous life. Is it déjà vu, a dream or is it real?
