Once again Honolulu joins in the global charity event called Twestival which uses social media to bring together people in support of global good. Last year we took place in the first ever global Twestival and in continuing with the annual event we have jumped onboard again to bring our love and aloha to those less fortunate. This year’s charity is Concern Worldwide who not only helps those in extreme poverty in Africa and Asia but is also helping those in need in Haiti who were hit hard by a recent devastating earthquake.

What is Twestival?

“On Thursday 25 March 2010, people in hundreds of cities around the world will come together offline to rally around the important cause of Education by hosting local events to have fun and create awareness. Twestival (or Twitter Festival) uses social media for social good. All of the local events are organized 100% by volunteers and 100% of all ticket sales and donations go direct to projects. Follow @twestival for global updates or @hitwestival for local Honolulu updates.“

Singer-songwriter Mailani Makainai returns to the Hawaiian music scene with her first solo album on the Mountain Apple Company label. “Mailani” features her beautiful, unique voice and original songs that have endeared her to fans in Hawai’i and around the world.

Mailani, who grew up in Kailua Town on O’ahu’s Windward Coast, is part of a musical family. She started singing at the age of two and taught herself ‘ukulele while in high school. It was at Maryknoll Schools that she met Lei Melket, with whom she later formed Keahiwai, one of the most popular female duos in Hawai’i.

Keahiwai released its first album, “Local Girls,” in May 2001. “Local Girls” garnered the duo two Na Hoku Hanohano Awards and growing acclaim. Their sophomore album, “Satisfied,” was released the following year in 2002, and included the hit song “Falling.” The duo went on to release three additional award-winning albums and tour throughout Polynesia and the West Coast.

Mailani, who balanced her music career with college, went on to graduate from the University of Hawai’i at Mänoa with a Bachelor of Arts degree in Hawaiian Studies. Subsequently, she built on her interest in the healing arts by becoming a licensed massage therapist and a practioner of lomilomi.

Mailani Makainai

In 2003 and 2004, Mailani was honored to perform at the Merrie Monarch Festival in support of Halau Mohala ‘Ilima with Uncle Kihei, Aunty Mapu, and their daughter Kapalai’ula de Silva.

In 2006, Mailani was invited to do a podcast with Doctor Trey and Jroq that focused on the Hawaiian music industry. This involvement led her to begin a new project with two other women in the industry, Jenn Jroq Wright of Kanalo and Simple Souls, and Tiki Suan from Milo Shade. Together, they formed Mighty J and in 2007, released the album “Calling Out.”

Mailani continues to explore new ventures, most recently opening a boutique day spa in the Kalihi neighborhood of Honolulu. The Oasen Spa is located right next door to her parent’s business, Makainai Cabinets.

The 5 original songs on this new album hold true to Mailani’s belief in holding ‘ohana, community, and tradition close to her heart. Her sweet distinctive voice and honest emotions come through in every song, making her one of Hawai’i’s most endearing rising stars.

Mailani’s CD is available on Mountain Apple Records

Now that the 2009 Honolulu Twestival is over, I can finally say YES WE DID! What only started in the planning stages a few weeks ago with a YES WE CAN attitude finally became a reality this past Thursday with a tremendous outpouring of support from not only the Hawaii Twitter community, but also from local businesses and the IRL (in real life) community to help make it all possible.

I am just truly thankful for the support that was shown throughout the community and spread across Twitter. I remember when I sent out DM’s (direct messages) to everyone talking about Twestival and how we in Hawaii should be a part of this since we are the master of tweetups. The response I received was amazing! Everyone was interested and ready to jump right in, although in my mind I truly thought if it was possible at all it would be a little smaller and would be in a setting more cozy and without loads of bands and sponsors. But I was proven wrong, which in this case was a good feeling!

On the eve of Jan. 28th at a food court table in Ala Moana Shopping center the event was born. We tossed around venues, ideas and then Oceans 808 came up. That very night after the pow wow around the food court table, Matt Matsumoto (@mattmatsu) and myself headed over to Oceans 808 to discuss securing the venue. Surprisingly with no hesitation they were ready to support, but did mention “you plan to do all this in two weeks?” “Yes why not?”, was our response. A little while after I finally realized that the venue we had chosen was so fitting for our cause. OCEANS = WATER. How crazy is that? Do you think someone was showing us it was truly meant to be? I do.

So from messages shooting back and forth on our little group to me hanging out almost every night with musicians, who are also dear friends and wanted to be a part of our wonderful event, it became overwhelming. I never before seen so much outpouring of aloha towards an event in such a short period of time, but in Hawaii ANYTHING is possible!

Being that I’m in the military, it has taken me to places around the world. In my travels, I have seen areas of poverty and poor infrastructure where finding a clean glass of water is so very hard unless you’re fortunate enough to have money to do so. Just think, a couple dollars for water may not seem much to us, but in parts of the world it can take months or even a year to even make that kind of money. Yes hard to believe, but true. Some places don’t even have the opportunity to have running water or the convenience of just turning a knob on for clean, fresh water. We often take this for granted so much in America. The Twestival allowed us to come together not only for a good time, but to also raise both awareness and money for a cause that I wholeheartedly support: “charity: water.”

I think this entire event and coming togetherness truly shows what the power of social media can do. And to all those supporters and businesses that helped us in raising enough money to show the world that Hawaii is a force to be reconded with, I say MAHALO! You really do get it!

$7,000+ for charity in an event that came together in 2 weeks! How amazing is that!
Might I also add that we had over 200 in attendence at the event. WOW!

Mahalo to all the organizers, supporters, musicians and our venue (Oceans 808) who came together in such short notice to show the world the aloha that makes Hawaii so unique.

The people of Hawaii are filled with so much aloha that in many ways it’s contagious. But you already know that right? Well if you thought we had love before, wait till you hear about the participation of Honolulu in the 2009 global Twestival event!

History of Twestival:

“In September 2008, a group of Twitterers based in London UK decided to organise an event where the local Twitter community could socialize offline; meet the faces behind the avatars, enjoy some entertainment, have a few drinks and tie this in with a food drive and fundraising effort for a local homeless charity.

The bulk of the event was organized in under two weeks, via Twitter and utilized the talents and financial support of the local Twittersphere to make this happen.

Around the world similar stories started appearing of local Twitter communities coming together and taking action for a great cause. Twestival was born out of the idea that if cities were able to collaborate on an international scale, but working from a local level, it could have a spectacular impact.“

Hawaii has become known throughout the Twittersphere for organizing quick get togethers or “tweetups” in much the same way that the founders of Twestival did. So when word of a global tweetup came to light it was only fitting that Hawaii MUST be included. With less than two weeks away from the 2009 Twestival, a group of Honolulu tweeps (Twitter people) started a chatter and later met at a food court table in Ala Moana Shopping Center to discuss and try to organize what is now the official Honolulu Twestival! It went from nothing to amazing in only a matter of days and with that Honolulu has now joined 175+ cities around the world who will host a Twestival in their community for an evening of fun and to raise money and awareness for charity: water.

So we talk about Twitter and the name Twestival gets it’s name because of Twitter + Festival, but in reality this is not just a Twitter thing this is a global thing! Yes for EVERYONE! This is a 100 percent volunteer driven effort to raise money for charity: water, a non-profit bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing nations. It’s people coming together globally for a single cause on the same day in hopes of bringing awareness to this global crisis.

Right now, 1.1 billion people on the planet don’t have access to safe, clean drinking water. That’s one in six people. Many communities in developing nations often have a plentiful supply of clean drinking water just below the ground, but no way to get to it. This is where charity: water and its partner organizations come in.

Please join us and meet good people and have a good time, all for a good cause. 100 percent of ticket sales go to charity: water.

Event:
Honolulu’s pau hana-style Twestival event will feature great food, drinks, raffle, and a lineup of live Hawaii entertainment, including Guy Cruz, Anuhea, Mailani Makainai, Jama Hang, and Sunset. The event will also be live-streamed across the Internet and Honolulu will be the final city featured in this 24-hour worldwide party. All eyes will be on the Aloha State!

Last night was a “So Fly” night at Brew Moon Honolulu with a special appearance by Slim of the group 112.

As usual Saturdays are R&B and Hip-Hop at the Moon with an event called “Sauce” put on every week by local promoters, No Way Out Entertainment. Last night was a special surprise when it was announced that Slim (Marvin Scandrick) of the R&B super group 112, who was made popular in the mid 90’s under the amazing Sean “Puffy” Combs, was slated to take stage and perform.

This special event helped to spark up our popular trend in Honolulu called “Tweetup” after I mentioned the event to a group of friends on Twitter. Next thing I know we were calling a meetup/tweetup at the Moon which would come to be known as #slimbrew and another excuse to get out and hang with some great Honolulu people.

A good number of people turned out for #slimbrew where we enjoyed the wonderful food and drinks from Brew Moon located in the Ward Shopping Center. Some were planning to stay for Slim but when the promoters said he would go on around midnight everyone decided to leave, including myself. But wait! We must get back to Slim…but how? Well I left around 10pm and was headed out to the car. Actually got in and rolled off when the phone rings and a friend said HEY! Are you going to the Moon? I was like, I just left there…anyway long story short I returned to the Moon around 11pm and met up with 6 friends. We had a blast hanging out and waiting for Slim to come on stage.

Then…it was announced! Slim of 112 is in the building! The girls in the place went crazy because Mr. “So Fly” was in the house. After another 15-20min’s Slim finally took the stage. He started off with yelling “where my true 112 fans at?” People were yelling and screaming and he kicked it off singing some of the old 112 songs including “Anywhere” (PG-13) and “Peaches & Cream” (PG-13).

Then came the finale of the night. Slim stopped singing and started getting personal with the Hawaii crowd. He mentioned that he “LOVED HAWAII”, and that he had family here! How crazy…people never knew. Apparently he spent his New Year here lighting off fireworks from the garage roof of one of his family members places in Waipahu. He also mentioned that he loved Hawaii so much that he was actually looking for property here…he asked the crowd for suggestions. Sweet!

So final, final, final…he said to all those that have told you that you can’t do it or that you will never make it, you tell them just two things. Number one he quoted from Philippians 4:13 which says “I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.” And the second and last thing he said…was “So Fly.”

After the performance Slim said, “I’m not like those other artists who perform and then leave”…and with that he hung around and continued partying with the rest of the crowd till closing.

Thanks Slim for the awesome performance and for being so real with the people of Hawaii.

Thanks to all that turned out for #slimbrew: Mahalo, Mahalo

P.S. Rumor is Slim may return for the Pro Bowl next month at Aloha Stadium…SO FLY!

Let there be lights! This Saturday, downtown will get dressed up for the season, Hawaii-style. The ceremonial lighting of the city’s 50-foot tree in Honolulu Hale (city hall) kicks off the Honolulu City Lights celebration at 6 p.m. The tree lighting will be immediately followed by an electric light parade, which runs from Aala park back to Honolulu Hale.

Then, take in a holiday concert (Sky Gate area), starting at 7:30 which will feature John Cruz, Jake Shimabukuro, Karen Keawehawai’i, Kristian Lei and J Boog & Laga Savea. Then, wander around to see the uniquely island light displays, including a 21-foot Santa flashing the shaka, a surfing snowman and a mega ukulele.

If this doesn’t get you singing Mele Kalikimaka, nothing will. Scrooge.

Three award-winning Hawaiian Island artists have united their musical talents under the touring moniker “Hawaiian Aloha” to perform on the East Coast this January as well as Summer 2009 dates. Raiatea Helm (two-time GRAMMY nominee), Kohala (featuring Hawaii’s first GRAMMY recipient Charles Michael Brotman), and Keale (first cousin of Hawaii’s revered musician Israel Kamakawiwo’ole) begin their tour in New York City with showcases for the annual APAP (Association of Performing Arts Presenters) conference. Their New York performances include the upscale Manhattan World and Jazz music venue ‘DROM‘ on Monday, 1/12/09, and the famous ‘B.B. King’s‘ in Times Square on Wednesday, 1/21/09. Their tour will also include performances in the Washington, D.C. metropolitan area where Helm, Kohala, and Keale will be joined by other noted Hawaiian Island musicians for the Tuesday, 1/20/09, Hawaii State Society Presidential Inaugural Ball performance in Washington, D.C .

In their East Coast performances, each artist will be featured via their own performance set, as well as a performance set together. Their joint performances will include a song recently written and completed specifically for the Hawaii State Society Presidential Inaugural Ball and President elect Barack Obama, entitled “Hawaii’s Gift”.

Raiatea Helm, 2 time GRAMMY nominee, is Hawaii’s young female vocalist with a style that comprises both the traditional and the future of Hawaiian music.

Kohala’s blend of island/folk/jazz features Hawaii’s first GRAMMY recipient, Charles Michael Brotman. (www.palmrecords.com )

Keale, a powerful presence on stage, brings forth the music of his cousin Israel
Kamakawiwo’ole (“IZ”) with his captivating vocals and acoustic style.

The Hawaiian Aloha Tour presents an unusual opportunity for the U.S. Mainland, East Coast Music and Entertainment Industry as well as the General Listening public. This rare opportunity to experience the most popular and accomplished, acoustic representation, of award-winning music existing on the Hawaiian Islands today is sonically incomparable.

Looking for a wonderful Christmas gift with an 808 feel? Why not check out the new album titled “808s & Heartbreak”, which is the fourth studio album by American hip hop artist Kanye West.

Now you’re probably wondering why would this be on topic for Hawaii which is what we are all about? Could it be the fact that the album title has “808″ in it? Guess again! The title actually refers to the Roland TR-808 drum machine which was used in the recording of the album.

So where’s the connection that would cause US to be talking about this as a great gift?

West felt that the 808 is an important instrument that can be used to evoke emotion; the concept was introduced to him by Jon Brion. According to West, the fact that Hawaii’s area code was “808″ was incidental, as he had already developed the album’s title before being informed.

Well, not only is Kanye West one of my favorite Hip-Hop artist out there, but the fact that he was able to record this album in under two weeks in our beautiful Hawaii at Avex Honolulu Studios, makes it just enough to get our attention and pass it on to you.

So if you’re looking for that wonderful gift for this holiday season, why not get the album shipped to you from an online store (Amazon) or go the digital route and purchase it in iTunes.

Either way, when you hear this wonderful album, not only will you be listening to the 808’s (as in the drum machine), but you will also be hearing something created in the fresh Hawaiian air of “The 808 State.”

The upcoming November “Second Saturdays” event, held at the Royal Hawaiian Center in Waikiki, will feature singer/songwriter John Cruz.

“From the time he was a young boy growing up in Palolo Valley on Oahu, John Cruz knew he was destined to play music. Whether inside or outside the home, his earliest memories were filled with song. His Hawaiian grandmother had a beautiful voice and sang in church. His mom loved the Motown sound and had an extensive record collection. His dad played country music and taught John to perform live shows at a very young age. His brothers and sisters were all musically inclined and, along with numerous aunties, uncles, cousins, neighbors and friends, they have surrounded John with the gift of music for his entire life.

Although John grew up in Hawaii, it wasn’t until he moved to the East Coast in 1983 that he developed his own style as a singer songwriter. During his 12 years in the Northeast, John cut his musical teeth in subways, coffeehouses and bars in New York’s Greenwich Village, as well as in the clubs and local haunts from Martha’s Vineyard to the Boston area. While attending the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, John ventured in to acting and dancing, which strengthened his command of the stage.“

- JohnCruz.com

Come on down and enjoy the wonderful sounds of John Cruz on Saturday November 8th @7pm.

Used-book stores come in two varieties: super cool and super lame. The cool ones are jam packed with books you want to read, blast indie music and almost always include a comic section. The lame ones contain only Harlequin romance novels and hardcover mysteries. Those are the kind of places whose customers also visit the community center for bingo on Wednesdays.

Happily, Jelly’s in Aiea belongs to the cool crowd. Its unassuming, almost random location in an Aiea strip mall somehow just increases the hipster vibe. And when you go, don’t be fooled by the random look of the shelves—the place is well organized with a good selection of music and books (and I assume comics, but I’m no expert. Sorry!)

The atmosphere is stripped-down but functional. I liked the music listening stations, and I didn’t feel awkward squatting in the aisles for almost two hours, reading bits of each book that caught my eye. I could see these guys adding a small coffee bar to make the place more of a destination. My only criticism is a lack of seating. You’ve got to have a place to sit and look at all the oddities you find. But squatting and leaning work too.

Go with an open mind to Jelly’s. You can’t always find something specific, but you’ll always find something you want.

Cool Fact: Jelly’s was also a hit with ABC who used it to film scenes for the hit TV show “LOST” which is filmed entirely on Oahu.

I love a good street festival, especially when there’s no cover charge. And let’s face it, partying in the street is just cool. This year, I’ll be taking my costumed kiester down to the inaugural Hallowbaloo Music and Arts Festival in the Honolulu art district.

There will be three stages featuring free music acts from 5:30 to 10:30 along Nu’uanu Avenue. Acts range from soulful Hawaiian singer Guy Cruz, an 808Talk favorite, to national acts like jazz-influenced Brett Dennen, rated one of the top artists by Rolling Stone Magazine this year.

If you’d like to rock out with the keiki, the area art galleries will open their doors to trick-or-treaters from 3 to 6:30 (check out the website below for participating galleries). Then, let kids loose at the keiki entertainment area, with activities like spooky storytelling and face painting.

And as you know, no Halloween celebration is complete without a costume contest. Prizes go up to $700, which can buy you a lot of…er…Halloween candy. But be forewarned, you must register at the website in advance to compete.

The festival will be held on October 31 from 5:30 to 10:30 p.m. For more information, visit http://www.hallowbaloo.com

Yes I know I’m probably too young to have enjoyed ABBA during their time, but even us youngin’s like to go back in time and listen to some great music.

Anyway found this wonderful video and just wanted to share it with our readers out there. If you want to find out why ABBA thought Hawaii was so wonderful enough to write a song about it, then you gotta just get on a plane, sail on a ship, or just swim over to the islands and grab your own taste of “Happy Hawaii” because there’s just no other place like it in the world!

Yesterday was the start of this years 29th Annual Pan-Pacific Festival – Matsuri In Hawaii, which promotes cultural exchanges in the song, dance and traditions of people living in Japan, Hawaii, and the Pacific Basin.

Though the festival began primarily to present the historical cultural activities from Japan, it has grown to other Asian countries and the Pacific Rim countries as well; and the cultural education, friendships, and exchanges, leave long lasting impressions and memorable experiences for everyone.

It is a festival that can be enjoyed by all… tourists (malihinis) and locals (kamaainas)…. young and old. The 3-day celebration begins with festivities on Friday evening with entertainment, food, and a bon dance at our Ho’olaulea (street party). We culminate the weekend with a grand parade along Kalakaua Avenue on Sunday.

Aloha Friday! It’s time to welcome in another beautiful weekend here in Hawaii and everywhere around the world, but before we get to the fun of ocean, beach and surf, I wanted to brighten up your day with some wonderful talent from the islands.

Every year, the Brown Bags To Stardom (BBTS) puts on the best and largest music talent contest for high school students in Hawaii. While Brown Bags has originally been a traditional talent show that goes out to all the schools and does a review of the talent, this year individual performers and bands from over 40 high schools (public and private) were invited to create a music video and submit it to BBTS. One of those contestants for 2008 was Laurissa Asuega of Waianae High School, who created a music video titled “Crazy Love.”

While it may have not taken home an award, we at 808Talk feel it deserves special mention so please enjoy!

BBTS is an original talent show that started in 1981 long before the days of American Idol and America’s Got Talent. Visit Brown Bags To Stardom today and learn more about this wonderful talent show that seeks out the best of the best in Hawaii.
