Highlights of the day were the massive autograph sessions along the sidelines and the warm welcome the NFL players received from the military fans. The NFL along with their official military appreciation sponsor, USAA, came together to prepare Earhart Field on the Hickam AFB side of JBPHH to demonstrate their appreciation for the military and bring the NFL closer to those who serve. USAA also provided complementary food and refreshments in support of the military fans.

Hats off to a well put together event by the NFL, USAA, and the JBPHH Morale, Welfare and Recreation department.

Known as “The Southernmost Goodwill Games in the USA”, this unprecedented event features a Half Marathon, 10K and 5K races, and a variety of athletic tournaments for all ages. Bay Clinic, a network of nonprofit community clinics, has been named the beneficiary of this summer fundraiser with proceeds going toward the construction of a new Ka’u Family Health Center.

This event promises to be a memorable experience for runners of all ages and abilities. The race course traverses an old historic “Cane Field Road” in Ka’u, once used for hauling sugar cane to Na’alehu and Pahala sugar plantations. Offering one of the most scenic views of the Big Island’s southern coast, the route encompasses over 30 miles of breathtaking coastal landscapes from mauka to makai (mountain to sea).

Following the race, athletes will demonstrate their skills and compete for prizes in archery, basketball, Jan Ken Po, a hunter’s obstacle course and Portuguese horse shoe tournaments. Live music and entertainment, a live auction with Mayor Billy Kenoi, food and vendor booths, a health expo and a number of children’s activities will be also featured.

Early registration ends May 11, 2011 (today) with the next registration deadline being set for May 31st where entry fees will be raised on a tiered fee schedule. The Half Marathon fee before May 11th is $45, before May 31st will be $50, before June 10th will be $55, and on June 11th will be raised to $60. The other races and tournaments have similar price increases on each deadline. Fans are invited to dress in costume to support their team of choice, and are encouraged to bring a change of clothes for the post-bout slip and slide races. For a door charge of $7 for the general public ($5 with valid military ID), fans can look forward to live roller derby, snacks and a bake sale, live music and the opportunity to join the derby girls in an afternoon of fan-appreciation field day games, relays, and races after the on skates action. All funds raised support Pacific Roller Derby’s efforts to purchase a sport court so they can find an indoor venue to call home, and the organization’s operating expenses. Pacific’s Hideaway scrimmages are family friendly events through 8pm when it becomes an 18+ event. Doors open at 3:30pm and the first whistle blows promptly at 4pm at the caged tennis courts at the USCG Air Station’s Hideaway Bar, at 1 Coral Sea Street. Pacific’s themed scrimmage and fundraiser will feature Oahu’s favorite skaters such as BeatHer Bailey, Bella de Brawl, and Malice in Wonderland dressed in their finest prom and nerd inspired uniforms as the local derby girls compete to see who has the grace and panache to shed some blood and reign supreme on the roughly paved, skin shredding concrete. The league’s newest skaters, Ace Wenchura, Whips n’ Salsa, A-Bomb, Dirty Karry, and Serial Skrapist will also make their debut at the Hideaway’s caged flat-track. Fans can look forward to live music by Higher Ground, a bbq and bake sale, shave ice, and the opportunity to drop a derby girl in the dunk tank. Derby fans can also look forward to the much anticipated opportunity to buy merchandise that features the league’s new logo.

Pacific’s Hideaway scrimmages are family friendly events, though the bar welcomes fans aged 18+ after sunset. The game of SKATE was first played in the 1970′s by vertical skateboarding legends Lance Mountain, Neil Blender and John Lucero, and was then adopted by street skaters in the 1980′s. Since then it’s become an annual tournament that tours local skate parks around the world to bring together some of the best skateboarders who fight for a spot in the Amateur World Championships.

Yesterday marked the stop of the tour in Honolulu which took place at A’ala Park. Just as any other metropolis, Honolulu has some very talented skateboarders.

We’ll update you with the 2008 final results from game of SKATE Honolulu as they become available…in the meantime take a tour of A’ala Park with the Red Bull Skateboarding Team or tour various skateparks in Hawaii with the QuickSilver Skateboard Team and then if you still need something to do, check out the APB A’ala Park Boardshop.

“Former University of Hawai`i record setting quarterback Colt Brennan was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Brennan was the only Warrior selected in the two-day, seven-round draft which was conducted at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Brennan was the 20th pick in the sixth round (186th overall) and one of three Redskins picks in that round. The NCAA’s all-time touchdown passes leader (131) finished third in this year’s Heisman Trophy race. Brennan led UH to an undefeated (12-0) regular season and trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the school’s first Bowl Championship Series appearance.

Brennan finished his career with a total of 31 NCAA records under his belt and the most prolific passer in school, WAC, and arguably NCAA history. He finished third all-time in career passing yards (14,193) and second in total offense (14,740) and passing efficiency (167.6).

Brennan is the first UH quarterback drafted since Rafael Cherry was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 1985 Draft. Although a quarterback in college, Cherry played defensive back for the Redskins. Larry Arnold was the last UH signal caller to be drafted and play that position in the NFL (1970 by Los Angeles Rams).

The Irvine, Calif., native continues the UH tradition of quarterbacks playing in the professional ranks. Timmy Chang, the NCAA’s all-time passing yardage leader, is currently playing the Canadian Football League. Nick Rolovich and Dan Robinson were free agent signees for several NFL teams. “

“UH Unveils New Uniforms

With futuristic mannequins as models, the University of Hawaii unveiled a new look today.

The uniforms are part of a breakthrough eight-year, $4.1 million apparel and marketing deal with Under Armour announced in February.

The jersey tops were black and white with green short sleeves and dark-green trim.

The pants were black to match the black tops and green to go with the white top.

Both jerseys have “Hawaii” spelled out on the front with the Under Armour logo on the top left.

UH trumpeted the deal as putting it on par with many Bowl Championship Series schools.“

My Review:

After taking a look at these new uniforms and those of the past “Rainbow” football team I think the direction that the UH Athletics is going in is a good one. The colors are done nicely and the keeping of the bands on the shoulder was a nice touch, although I did notice it is no longer on the legs as before. Also from personal experience with Under Armour clothing, I’m sure the comfort level will be much better than with the predecessor. UH needs to keep that nice strong powerful look and Under Armour was the perfect match to do just that. I mean even the “H” logo and Under Armour logo go together right? Well as new head coach McMackin said “every team has it’s own personality and this is the start of our personality.” I totally agree with you Mac! If you look good out there, you feel good which ultimately pushes you to do better, so on to the new season with some new uniforms, new head coach and new lineup. LET’S GO WARRIORS!

“The University of Hawai’i Athletics Department, in partnership with Aloha Stadium, will host the “Football ‘Ohana Festival” Saturday, Apr. 26. Both parking and admission are free. Fan activities begin at 5:00 p.m. and the “Warrior Bowl” kicks off at 7:00 p.m.

“This is an opportunity for the entire community to come together and celebrate Warrior football.” Greg McMackin, UH head coach, said. “We want to show our appreciation to our fans by treating them to a fun-filled evening at Aloha Stadium.”

Fans should enter the parking lot through the main entrance on Salt Lake Boulevard and the stadium through Gate 4. The parking lot will open at 4:00 p.m. and the stadium at 5:00 p.m.

The first 4,000 fans will receive a free copy of the 2008 Allstate Sugar Bowl commemorative poster. There will be free contests and activities available in the south concourse, including jump castles from Xtreme Fun Rentals and assorted games. Prizes will be awarded, including promotional items from UH Corporate Partners and free tickets to UH sporting events. Concession and merchandise stands will be open.

From 5:30-6:30 p.m., members of the UH football team and Head Coach Greg McMackin will be available in the south concourse for autographs and photos, so fans are encouraged to bring their cameras and whatever UH items they would like the players to sign.“

Tyler Graunke was Hawaii’s next quarterback, but instead of sealing the legacy. He watched from the bench as Colt Brennan became Colt Brennan.“

With Colt now gone, Graunke was set to take his turn as the starting QB for the University of Hawaii, but that went downhill again with his recent suspension and then reinstatement.

Graunke now has to once again prove he is worthy for the #1 spot and to this day, he continues to wait his turn…we shall see what August 30th, 2008 will bring. Will Graunke take center stage?
