Many say there is little to do on the island of Lana’i, but as I recently found out there is a lot of things to do especially in the midst of the outdoors, if exploring nature and seeing the beauty of the land is one of your enjoyable pastimes.

My next adventure on my VisitLanai2012 tour is to an area called Kaiolohia, also known as Shipwreck Beach, which is located about 25-30 minutes North of the small town of Lana’i City and is easily accessible by 4×4 vehicle or even from seaside via a boat excursion.

Liberty shipwreck at Shipwreck Beach

Not only is this a remarkable site to view an old 1940′s era oil tanker (Liberty Ship) who now calls the coral reef of Shipwreck Beach home, but you can also venture out and explore to find Hawaiian petroglyphs and even get an amazing panoramic view of both Moloka’i and Maui on a clear day.

The road to Shipwreck Beach

When deciding to explore down to Shipwreck Beach, remember that the only way to proceed by vehicle is to use a 4×4 and when doing so be sure to adhere to the precautions and safety tips provided by your 4×4 rental service of which there is really only one major provider (4×4 Jeep Safari) who provides detailed route information for Kaiolohia and a handful of other 4×4 routes on Lana’i.

Park and walk to Shipwreck Beach

I took in the view of Shipwreck Beach via the 4×4 option, but if you prefer a water approach you can explore the coast line via a Safari Boat Excursion that leaves from Maui’s Lahaina Harbor and sets out to circumnavigate the island of Lana’i cruising by Shipwreck Beach along the way (video).

Shipwreck Beach Precautions/Things To Remember:
Swimming is not advised due to strong current
Be cautious of driving in too far to prevent vehicles from being stuck in the soft sand
Bring sunscreen
Bring plenty of water and food since you will be 30 minutes away from anything
Be sure your vehicle gas level is at least 1/2 tank (full is much better)
Bring a camera and take in the beauty

Horseback riding, a new found love of mine, is not something I can say I am very experienced in, but when it comes to feeling comfortable while enjoying nature and an amazing view at the same time, horseback riding sure is a winner for me.

During my recent (and first) trip to the beautiful island of Lana’i, I was able to experience some of the best scenery and amazing openness of the outdoors that the island has to offer via horseback adventure with Hawaii Western Adventures at The Stables at Koele. Being the early riser that I am, I opted for the 9am adventure which allowed me to experience the early-day cool air and some enjoyable encounters with wild deer that highlighted my experience with nature.

Saddle Up!

During our horseback adventure, our guide (Cody Bradford) from the stables was of great assistance in explaining what we were seeing on the trails and also shared with us great vantage points of the majestic views across the open plains of Lana’i, and explained the story of the island, it’s history, and even the origins of the Hawaiian cowboy (paniolo).

Lana’i View By Horseback

Our total horseback riding experience was about 2 hours and opened up to reveal not only views of Lana’i, some of which can only be seen by horseback, but also distant breathtaking views of Molokaʻi and Maui. In addition to horseback riding, Hawaii Western Adventures offers sporting clays, UTV rides, horse-drawn carriage rides, archery, and even custom adventures suited to fit your personal adventure level. Whether you’re Kama’aina from another island, or tourist visiting from another part of the world, be sure and relax, take in the fresh air, and enjoy a truly scenic and peaceful horseback ride on the island of Lana’i.

Rest and relaxation is something everyone needs from time to time to forget the worries of everyday life. This past weekend was just that time for me as I had the wonderful opportunity to take some time off and enjoy a trip to the beautiful island of Maui. While those who know me well can confirm that my favorite island is Kauai, with the Big Island (Hawaii) coming in second, it is a little known fact that Maui is also one of my favorites falling in at number three. I decided to take this chance during the extended holiday to visit Maui as a getaway and to enjoy a more quiet and peaceful Fourth of July away from the sometimes more fast paced life of Oahu, which is my home island. Only having the opportunity to experience a few short days on Maui I opted to veer away from the Lahaina and Kaanapali area, which is where I have frequented so many times in the past, and spend the weekend in the Wailea area, which is home to many resorts such as the Four Seasons, Grand Wailea, and my new favorite, The Fairmont Kea Lani.

Polo Beach

The Fairmont Kea Lani is a spectacular all-suite hotel and villa resort, which was the ideal location to spend a quiet time relaxing, sipping Mai Tai’s or an Uncle Sam poolside, and taking in the beauty and splendor that makes Hawaii one of the most unique and beautiful places on earth. Kea Lani, which means “heavenly white”, is truly a great description for this wonderful paradise resort. From the beautiful Hawaiian and Middle Eastern architectural design, to the amazing view of Molokini, Kahoolawe, and Lanai from the fronting Polo Beach, Kea Lani has the tranquility and inviting atmosphere that anyone would appreciate, and the sense of pride and Aloha from all the staff I encountered was a testament to the quality, service and experience that can only come from Hawaii.

So if you’re Kamaaina looking for an interisland getaway, or a visitor from another part of the world trying to decide where you should take that much needed break from the busy world, take some time to check out the Fairmont Kea Lani in Wailea, Maui.

If you can’t visit another planet, go to Hawaii. This place is literally unique on Earth. Hawaii is a lot more than clichés. This still is a place for explorers. Most of the famous culture, the essence of Polynesia, is barely understood beyond the superficial tourist image. The islands have ecologies like nowhere else on Earth. Grab a ticket and some travel insurance and come and see for yourself.

Featured Photo Credit: Tim Wilson

Hawaii, the ongoing story of a legend

Hawaii is a chain of volcanic islands which sit in the middle of the huge, wild Pacific and are still growing. The giant waves crash into lava which is still building them. This is the “real world”, the ancient forces which created the world we know, still at work. Nobody who’s ever seen them can fail to understand the power and the beauty of these things.

The Hawaiian islands are the classic case of island ecologies. First they were colonized by plants, then birds and animals. Then came the humans. The human colonization happened about 2500 years ago, when Polynesian colonists from the Marquesas (now French Polynesia), 2000 miles to the south, arrived, followed by another wave around the year 1000AD.

This all happened 2,000 miles from the North American mainland. The Polynesians, one of the world’s great seafaring cultures, colonized the Pacific on a scale which dwarfs the European colonial efforts of a thousand years later, with sailing canoes. It was an incredible feat of seamanship that modern science could barely believe it, until the 1950s. This was the basis of a truly complex, rich culture, and it’s still alive and well in Hawaii.

Modern Hawaii

When the rest of the world belatedly “discovered” Hawaii thanks to media in the 20th century, Europeanization soon became Hawaiianization. Unlike other cultures, Hawaiian culture didn’t disappear under the concrete. Visitors disappeared under Hawaiian shirts and great food. Hawaiian culture became a major global cultural identity, and a tourist magnet.

The “tourist magnet” also changed. What was once basic tourism became awe, as people learned more about the islands. The knowledge may have come in some roundabout ways, but Hawaii registered on the global consciousness, even despite mass media and associated kitsch. A Hawaiian kahuna introduced surfing to Australia, and a whole global lifestyle was born. Popular culture in the 50s was hypnotized by the legendary Banzai pipeline. The world wanted to know about this incredible place.

Then came eco-tourism, and something much more like real understanding and genuine respect of one of the world’s most magical places. Any island tour will soon show anyone why people keep coming back to Hawaii. There’s so much to see, it takes years to explore the place.

Unlike many “tourist destinations”, Hawaii more than delivers on its promises. It’s not only a fantastically beautiful place, it’s a revelation. Every part of Hawaii is a fabulous story. If you want a new world to explore, it’s all right here. Get your hands on some cheap travel insurance, and prepare to be dazzled by an experience like no other.

The Ali’i Luau is located at the Polynesian Cultural Center in Laie on Oahu’s North Shore.

The Ali’i Luau is arguably the most authentic luau in Hawaii and includes seating to the Polynesian Cultural Center’s new Ha: Breath of Life evening show which is a spectacle of over a hundred performers from across the Pacific, drums, dance, all new music and special effects, a fire spewing volcano and a world renowned fire knife performance. The story goes that born just after his parents wash ashore, Mana begins a South Pacific odyssey that leads to becoming a warrior. In the process, he must prove his worthiness to wed the fair Lani by walking on fire. And, ultimately, he must battle to protect his new family from marauding invaders. The tale is as old as the islands, and as new as each breath we take.

The Ali’i luau includes a pig ceremony where a large pua’a (Hawaiian for pig) is cooked in the imu and presented each day at the luau. The menu also includes:

Poi, the traditional Hawaiian staple. It is a starch dish made by pounding boiled taro roots and mixing with water until it reaches a smooth consistency. “Taro is one of the most nutritious starches on the planet,” says Ambassador of Aloha Cousin Benny. Some Hawaiians eat their poi with salt, some with sugar, even soy sauce. Some like it thicker or thinner. Others like it several days old for a little extra tang; and malahini, or newcomers, might find it more to their liking at first if they eat it with a bite of the other meat dishes.

For those willing to try anything once, we offer poke, or raw fish marinated in lemon or lime juice with other condiments and a little coconut cream. Normally offered in the Hawaiian-style of raw fish with sea salt, seaweed and onions, we’ve chosen the more pleasing Tahitan preparation to introduce you to this island favorite. If you want the more Hawaiian-style version, you’ll need to go a mom-and-pop local store, backyard luau or small Hawaiian restaurant to get a taste.

Lomilomi salmon. In Hawaiian, lomilomi means to massage, or in this case to break the salmon into small pieces, which are then mixed with tomatoes, onions, and other small condiments, giving it a delicious tangy taste that goes great with poi. This style of fish preparation was introduced to Hawaii by early western sailors.

Pipi kaula, or a seasoned beef jerky, harks back to the earliest days of western sailors who brought their salt beef aboard ship in barrels. In fact, on some of the South Pacific islands, you can still buy a barrel of salt beef.

Other favorite Hawaiian dishes served at the Ali’i Luau include:

Though ancient Polynesians brought moa, or chickens, with them from the South Pacific a thousand years ago, Asian influences have livened up the taste with teriyaki chicken.

Asian tastes have also contributed another luau favorite: Chicken long rice. Sometimes called thread or bean noodles, they are boiled and served hot with pieces of chicken. Try it over a little white rice.

Filets of tasty, flakey white meat island fish that is deep-fried.
Dark purple Hawaiian sweet potatoes that have been mixed into a cold salad.

Taro rolls that have a distinctive purple color, derived from the taro flour used in the recipe. They are baked fresh daily at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Other items on the Ali’i Luau menu include:

A variety of salads: tossed greens with carrots and tomatoes, spinach salad, sweet potato salad, and cucumber-carrot salad. Each is served with your choice of ranch, papaya seed, and thousand island dressings.

Cold fruits: ripe pineapple spears, of course; and watermelon (in season).

Beverages (all decaffeinated): Diet Pepsi™, Root Beer, Sprite™, Fruit Punch, Passion-Orange-Guava, Coffee, Herbal Teas. Caffeinated coffee and Coca-cola™ are available upon request. Alcohol is not served at the Polynesian Cultural Center.

Even the dessert table offers delightful Hawaiian treats, including:

Haupia (sweet custard cubes made with rich coconut cream), coconut cake, and chocolate cake.

Visitors will also enjoy live music from our band and couples celebrating their wedding or anniversaries are invited up to the stage to dance while the Polynesian Cultural Center musicians play The Hawaiian Wedding Song.

An announcement from a recent poll of USA Today readers has singled out Honolulu as the “Best American Destination” beating out Yellowstone National Park in the final face-off where the destination captured 77% of the final votes. This is coming as a delight to both residents and tourism folks throughout the state and brings much more needed attention to the islands as a place to look at for a tropical travel destination right here within the United States.

It’s true that Honolulu may be a major metropolis now with tall buildings and a busy downtown business district, but it’s the beaches, fresh air, warm weather and most of all the culture and people that make it so much different from any other place. On top of all this, once you get to Honolulu, the major arrival point, you can always venture out to places like my favorite island of Kauai which is only a 30-40 minute island hop away.

So what are you waiting for? Why not start planning a visit to Honolulu or one of many other locations in the islands and enjoy the relaxing atmosphere that is uniquely Hawaii.

Did you know the Iolani Palace had electric lights and telephone service before the White House and Buckingham Palace? Are you interested in Hawaiian mythology? Looking for an interesting way to spend a weekend morning in Honolulu? If you would like to learn more about Honolulu history, check out the Ohana Walking Tours in downtown Honolulu Saturday and Sunday mornings from 9-11 AM. Ohana is the Hawaiian word for family and your whole gang can join in on these excursions.

Ohana Walking Tours invited our ohana to a Sunday morning jaunt with tour guide Richard Wong, a local expert on the olden days. Richard’s family has lived in Honolulu for five generations. As a young history buff, Richard researched accounts of Honolulu, Oahu and surrounding islands. Over the years he has amassed a vast collection of antique glass bottles through excavation of abandoned buildings and demolished properties. As a Honolulu police officer he often had official access into government buildings and marveled at their splendor.

We began our two-hour tour at the famous golden Kamehameha Statue on King Street in downtown Honolulu just across from Iolani Palace. It was easy to identify our guide by the Ohana Walking Tours logo on his shirt. Richard began by telling us about his family’s long history on the island of O’ahu. The tour covers Hawaii history from ancient mythology to current events. Richard covered many topics including:

Four major Gods of nature:

Kane – God of all

Kanaloa – God of the sea

Lono – God of agriculture

Ku – God of war

Captain Cook’s celebrated landing on the islands and his ultimate demise

Key battles and unification of the islands

History of the Hawaiian monarchy and the only Royal Palace in the United States

Benefactors of Hawaii schools and State Library

Architectural insights

As amateur history buffs ourselves, we were impressed with the quantity and quality of information Richard shared with us. He is an articulate orator and storyteller who kept our attention throughout the tour. When I looked at my watch, it seemed hard to believe two hours had flown by. Richard related these tales to us without use of notes.

The “Navatek I” really delivers a unique dinner cruise experience unlike any other on Oahu.

Just a few days ago, I finally got the chance to experience the Royal Sunset Dinner Cruise on the Navatek I, which operates out of Pier 6 at Aloha Tower in Honolulu. This vessel is much different than most vessels out there and for those who tend to get seasick, this is a ride that you might just be able to handle. The vessel’s unique design allows it to virtually glide across the water because it sits on two submerged hulls, which absorb most of the swell effect of the ocean. After this ride I can say that undoubtedly this is the smoothest dinner cruise I have been on, and I have now experienced them all on Oahu.

Now let’s talk about the cruise experience, which I’m sure you are all anxious to hear about. The journey started off first with all the passengers taking pictures in front of a beautiful mural, which later was nicely packaged and presented to each group at the end of the dinner with the option to purchase (makes for a great souvenir). After that we boarded the Navatek I and were directed to the upper level for the Royal Sunset Dinner Cruise experience. Immediately after being seated our waitress greeted us with aloha, introduced herself, and asked for our drink orders. With the package you received three tickets per person, which are used in exchange for drinks from the menu. Shortly after the drinks arrived the food started coming out. First up was our shrimp appetizers and cocktail sauce, which were divine and quickly had me asking for more. At this point, we started to get underway and pull away from Pier 6 to commence the cruise out to sea. The overall setting was amazing and our view was just breathtaking as we slowly exited Honolulu harbor and immediately noticed the landmark Diamond Head off in the distance.

Next up on the food menu was the Royal Navatek salad. It was so wonderfully presented and more importantly it was delicious. By the way, the greens were from Waimanalo right here in Hawaii. It always makes me happy to see local businesses using local goods, and in this case local produce. Keep it local as we say in Hawaii. Next up was the main course, which consisted of full lobster and beef tenderloin with vegetables. First out was the lobster. As we dove into the main course, we were once again taken by the view. A sailboat alongside and Waikiki off in the distance made for an enjoyable and relaxing tone to set the mood. Guys this is definitely a win over for the ladies, wink. In between the lobster dish and tenderloin, a message was passed on from the Captain. The announcement stated that dolphins had been spotted off the bow (forward part of the vessel) and that the Captain would be slowing down so the guest could get a view. Everyone immediately rushed out to the forward deck to catch a glimpse of both adult and baby dolphins doing flips, twist, and all sorts of tricks for the guest. It was almost like the whole thing was planned, but honestly we just got lucky. It’s not everyday, even in Hawaii, that you get to see dolphins just 50 feet from you doing some amazing things and putting on a show.

Soon after the dolphin experience we headed back inside and finished off the main course. At this time, the entertainment was starting to get underway. Up until this point, a solo guitarist had provided music for our dinner, but now a group of Polynesian dancers were up on stage ready to give us a little taste of island style with the hula of Hawaii and the dances of Tahiti. They also managed to get some lucky guest from the crowd up on stage to join in on the fun as well.

With the entertainment only half way done, it was time to take a pause so everyone could gather out on deck to observe the sunset. It was a beautiful one, as always here in paradise, but for some reason it seemed to be so much more relaxing and romantic out on the water. Hard to explain, so I recommend you experience it yourself. To end off the night we returned back inside and found our dessert waiting. A delicious chocolate cake masterpiece with a nice refreshing cup of coffee, or hot tea for those who preferred it. Now one important thing to note is that the Navatek I dinner cruise is the only dinner cruise that goes beyond Diamond Head and gives you a brief look at the southeastern shores of Kahala and Maunalua Bay. All other dinner cruises do an immediate turn around just before Diamond Head.

Some other highlights I wanted to mention was the wonderful courtesy and aloha expressed by all the staff we met on the cruise. From check-in till departure, it was superb service! I also wanted to extend congratulations to one couple on board. Right there in front of us all, a marriage proposal was made and she said YES! What better place than in Hawaii and out on the Pacific Ocean. For this lucky couple, the Navatek I will always be a lasting memory and for you it can be too.

We showed you Diamond Head from above and hiking up Diamond Head but for a real adventure talk a walk around Diamond Head. Really! Around Diamond Head! Put on your comfortable shoes because we have a long hike ahead of us. Plan on four to five miles depending on your starting location.

The best time to take this walk is just before sunrise, before the day heats up. If you are starting from Waikiki, walk along Kalakaua Avenue and listen to the quiet of the morning. Traffic is light, mostly trucks delivering food and supplies to businesses. Say “hello” to your fellow early morning walkers and those visitors too jet lagged to sleep in. As you pass the Police Station near the Duke Kahanamoku statue, watch the surfers out catching the best waves of the day. Just outside the station, inside a fenced area are the four ancient Pohaku Stones, a gift from Tahitian healers to Hawaiian residents. Watch out for maintenance workers clearing trash or sweeping sand from the sidewalks to prepare the beach for the onslaught of sun bathers.

Continue walking past Kapiolani Park but don’t stop here before dawn. On your right, you’ll pass the huge banyan trees in front of the Waikiki Aquarium and Natatorium. Continuing along Kalakaua you will see sleepy tourists outside drinking their coffee and hotel workers clearing garden debris from the sidewalk. At the end of the park, take a right onto Diamond Head Road and begin your ascent.

This stretch can get crowded with walkers, runners, bikers and surfers early in the morning. Stay to the right and out of the traffic flow. Beautiful homes are nestled into the side of the volcano. As you pass Kaluahole, Makalei and Le’Ahi Beaches, the number of cars parked on the side of the road increase. Surfers know where the best waves are. If you want to try your luck here, be aware of a long, steep decline to get to the water on sometimes unstable slopes.

Listen to the new sounds along this stretch. Roosters crowing greetings to the new day. Other colorful birds like the Red-Crested Cardinal rustle in the branches. Keep your eyes open for mongoose darting through the rocks. A few stray cats cruise by checking out the scene. Check out the view over the Pacific as the sky begins to brighten.

Soon you will pass Diamond Head Lighthouse. The original was built in 1899 and replaced in 1917. The Fresnel lens shines brightly warning ships away from the jagged shoreline. Take in the view from the street as this lighthouse stands on the current residence of the 14th Coast Guard District Commander and is not open to the public.

Continue along past Kuilei Cliffs beach where you can rest your weary feet for a moment on the lava rock wall. Say hello to the master gardeners who keep this tropical garden trim and neat. This is a prime spot to wait for the sun to crest the ocean as the day officially begins.

Next up is the Amelia Earhart Monument and parking area. Watch out for buses as this is a favorite spot for tour guides to stop for photos. The Pacific views and beaches below are breathtaking. Look along the coast to the left and see Black Point and Doris Duke’s Shangri La. Built in the 1930′s, you can now tour the home and Islamic treasures Duke collected.

Across the street is Diamond Head Park, endowed by Muriel Flanders, and can be identified by the plaque on a large stone. She led the effort to replace the weeds and garbage with native plants. We are not quite at the half way point. Let’s continue on our walk.

As we reach the top of the rise, we will take a left as Diamond Head Road turns and Kahala Road goes straight along the coast. The large park at the intersection is a common gathering spot for charity walks and other events. Now we begin our long descent on the inland side of Diamond Head.

On the right, we pass Fort Rutger Military Reservation. Several buildings out in front and gates on the side of the road further along are made from lava rocks. Few remnants remain of the former Officers Club on the left side of the street. Also on the left is the driveway into Diamond Head State Park. If you still have energy, walk into the park then hike to the top of Diamond Head for spectacular views of the Pacific Ocean, Waikiki, and Honolulu. On your .8 mile hike you will climb 560 feet above the crater floor.

If you are not up for that hike, check out the outdoor workout area in the park on the right in front of Kapiolani Community College. Then walk to the front of the college for a tour of their cactus garden and views of Kahala and Koko Head Crater. If this is Saturday morning, check out the farmers market in the college parking lot. Fresh fruits, vegetables, and delectable treats await you. Pick up a cup of Kona coffee to sip while you shop. Taste island and other exotic dishes, even bakery items. As you get back to your walk, check out the Peace Garden nestled in the hillside across from the college entrance.

Now we are on the home stretch. Honolulu and Waikiki stand before you. Diamond Head Road becomes Monsarrat Avenue as we return to the Diamond Head neighborhood. Check out the stores and restaurants like the Diamond Head Market and Grill.

Continue under the tree canopy as you walk along the fence outside the Honolulu Zoo. On the weekends, local artists display their art on the fence and chat with each other or work on new art pieces. On your right is the Waikiki Shell where you can enjoy the outdoors and listen to music. We are back at Kapiolani Park. Check out the gazebo and statues or sit on a park bench and take in the sights.

What a great way to start the day. Now you won’t feel guilty about lounging on Waikiki Beach during the afternoon.

In celebration of May Day, Atlantis Submarines announced that children can enjoy its marine adventures this weekend for free, when accompanied by a paying adult.

The Keiki May Day Special is good for any child under 12 from Friday, May 1, through Sunday, May 3, for the submarine tours offered by Atlantis Submarines in Waikiki, Lahaina, and Kona, as well as for the Sunset Dinner Cruise offered by Atlantis Navatek Cruises.

Atlantis uses the world’s most technologically advanced passenger submarines to carry guests to depths of up to 125 feet amid schools of brightly colored fish and beautiful marine life. Green sea turtles, stingrays, reef sharks, and even humpback whales are often seen on the tours.

The quiet, battery-powered submarine features a spacious, air-conditioned cabin with plenty of leg and headroom and large viewing ports for each seat. Children must be 36-inches tall to participate and all guests must be able to navigate a nearly vertical 7-step ladder in and out of the submarine.

Atlantis Navatek Cruises departs Aloha Tower Marketplace each afternoon at 5:15 p.m. The 140-foot Navatek I comfortably seats more than 300 guests and features upper and lower observation decks and two air-conditioned dining rooms with large picture windows. With its state-of-the-art double-hulled design, Navatek I provides Hawaii’s smoothest cruise experience by lifting the passenger-carrying compartment above the ocean’s surface and limiting wave action against the vessel.

Guests are treated to a two-hour cruise along Oahu’s south shore that includes a sumptuous dinner, live entertainment, and spectacular views of the setting sun. For dinner, guests are offered a choice of the elegant Royal Sunset Dinner Cruise or the all-you-can-eat Sunset Buffet Dinner Cruise.

For more information or to make reservations, visit www.atlantissubmarines.com or call Atlantis toll-free at 1-800-548-6262. Complimentary transportation from Waikiki hotels is included. Prices do not include harbor fee and state excise sales tax.

Hawaii’s second-largest market for visitors – the San Francisco Bay Area – is going to see, hear, and experience the Islands of Aloha in March like never before in a new campaign led by the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau (HVCB).

Under the theme Hawaii: A Thousand Reasons to Smile, HVCB – with support from its four Island Chapters, Hawaiian Airlines, and Starwood Hawaii – is launching a month-long promotion during March that will showcase the appeal of Hawaii’s culture, natural beauty, and music to residents throughout the Bay Area.

John Monahan, HVCB’s president and CEO, said the campaign goal is to get consumers longing for the restorative benefits of a Hawaii vacation – especially during these stressful times – and showing how affordable it is to visit the islands.

“Getting people to smile is a perfect antidote to the nation’s dreary economic news,” said John Monahan. “And nothing defines being happy, carefree and lighthearted as much as a Hawaii vacation. We’re going to uplift spirits, recharge batteries and bring smiles back in a thousand ways starting with the great travel deals now being offered.”

The HVCB campaign with its cheery slogan will be seen in print, broadcast and online advertising, digital freeway bulletin boards, in train stations and BART cars, on ad walls in popular settings, and in Bay Area TV shows, including The View From the Bay.

The campaign will direct consumers to visit GoHawaii.com/LotsofSmiles, a new HVCB microsite that will engage them with interactive promotions, offer information about Hawaii events in the Bay Area, and let them plan their vacation.

Travel trade activities in the market will also bring further Hawaii visibility to travel agents and wholesalers in the market via incentive promotions, sales calls, agent training seminars with key suppliers, e-marketing initiatives, and webinars.

At the same time, HVCB’s public relations representatives will be hosting a kick-off event for more than 50 Bay Area media at the Fairmont San Francisco on Feb. 26 to seek consumer news coverage in various outlets. Honolulu Mayor Mufi Hannemann will be among the Hawaii delegation, which includes representatives from HVCB and its Island Chapters. Award-winning performer Willie K. and the Polynesian Cultural Center will provide entertainment.

To help keep the promotion fresh throughout the month, each week will focus on an island and accompanying theme that reflects its destination appeal, as follows:

March 1-7 Oahu – Town and Country

March 8-14 Kauai – 50 Years of Movies in Paradise

March 15-21 Maui – Romance Me Maui

March 22-28 Hawaii’s Big Island – Unlimited Adventure

In the island-style tradition of “work over, hang loose”, Hawaii’s music, cuisine, and Aloha Spirit will also be showcased in Aloha Friday Pau Hana Concerts being held at Gordon Biersch restaurants in San Francisco, Palo Alto, and San Jose.

Each Friday in March, from 5-11 p.m., some of Hawaii’s top entertainers will perform their musical magic, including Willie K., Raiatea Helm, Brother Noland, Mailani Makainai, Kealii Kanealii, John Cruz, Cyril Pahinui, and Taimane Gardner. Patrons will also enjoy a special menu of Hawaii-inspired cuisine and can win trips to the islands.

Additionally, on Friday, March 13, the Kauai Visitors Bureau is hosting a “Lucky Friday the 13th Kauai Celebration” from 11:30 a.m. – 1:30 p.m. at San Francisco’s One Market Plaza. Attendees will be treated to music from Kauai’s Nick Castillo and hula from Miss Garden Isle Noelani Kaui, while drawings are held for free Kauai trips and prizes featuring Kauai Made products.

“HVCB and its Island Chapters have created an enticing campaign that’s attractive and in touch with the times,” said Monahan. “We know from research that Bay Area residents have a strong affinity for our islands and we’re confident our marketing efforts will convince them to return soon or visit for the first time.”

One of my favorite activities during visits to Honolulu on the island of Oahu, Hawaii, is watching the hulu shows. Most nights you can catch a free show at Kuhio Beach Hula Mound on Waikiki Beach. This is just east of the Duke Kahanamoku statue. Hawaiian hula is a living record of the history and legends of the Hawaiian people. The dancers’ movements, music and chanting combine to tell the stories of their forefathers.

These outdoor shows feature local hula dancers ranging from novice keiki (children) to aunties (adults). I like to go to the show multiple nights to watch different halau (dance groups) perform. Each group has its own repertoire of songs, costumes and instruments.

If you are anywhere along the beach, you will know the show is about to begin when you hear the traditional blowing of the conch shell. Sometimes a torch lighter joins them as they make their way along the beach. This alerts vacationers to get their spot so as not to miss the start of the show. Bring a beach chair or pick up an inexpensive beach mat from any of the local quick marts and grab a spot near the mound.

Usually a narrator will introduce the history of Hawaiian culture and language to the group. Before the dancers begin, you will learn about each song’s message and the story it tells.

These dancers may wear traditional hula attire or more modern dress. To make the time-honored hula skirts, the dancers harvest and treat the long flat leaves of the green ti plant. Beautiful, fragrant leis are fashioned from colorful tropical flowers. A variety of nuts grown in the islands are strung together as necklaces.

Dancers share the mound with vocalists who chant and sing the traditional stories. Musicians join in with their mix of modern and traditional instruments to make each tale come alive. The large drums made of gourds or tree trunks have a full sound which carries along the beach.

Weather-permitting, you can catch these hula shows Tues, Thurs and Sat at 6:30-7:30 p.m. (6:00-7:00 Nov-Jan). These hula shows are one of my favorite stops on trips to Waikiki. Check out these shows often to learn more about the people and culture of the Hawaiian Islands. Aloha…

I can’t process that winter has arrived in Hawaii. It’s 85 degrees and sunny most days, after all. A few extra rain clouds do little to convince my internal barometer that the “cold” months have arrived to our islands.

So this year, I’m feeling the need to celebrate all things frigid. I cranked the A/C on Christmas Day so I could wear something long-sleeved. When it’s rainy, I secretly rejoice (sorry to all the visitors for the bad karma). I eat far too much eggnog-flavored ice cream.

And I finally went to visit the penguin colony at the Hilton Hawaiian Village. Granted, these are warm-weather penguins from Africa so they’re probably more comfortable in a hot tub than on an ice floe, but allow me to indulge in the fantasy.

Penguin Colony

This absolutely FREE exhibit features about a half-dozen African black-footed penguins, happily frolicking for visitors. They’re so cute, you want to reach out and pet them. Males are banded on the right wing, females on the left. They’re fed at 8 a.m., so pop by in the morning and get an extra treat.

While you’re there, you’re not limited to just ogling penguins. Stroll around the Hilton Hawaiian Village grounds and you’ll see flamingos, noisy macaws and more koi than you can shake a stick at. My personal favorite was the wood ducks that let you get so close, you could almost pet them. But that would be bad. So just stick to looking, folks, and enjoy!

Nestled on the property of the ritzy J.W. Marriott Ihilani at Ko Olina is a secret: their four secluded lagoons open to the public. Perfect surf, little thatched huts and a fantastic view of the ocean and resort grounds make this a fantastic destination for a lazy day.

For Kama’aina, the location makes you feel a little like you’re on vacation right at home. Visitors to our islands can catch a nice view of the western side of the island and enjoy the resort without having to pay the steep prices. I’d suggest dining at Azul restaurant in the main hotel, or take in the Paradise Cove Luau, also located right at the resort. Sit on the beach a spell, then head over to gorge yourself. Life just doesn’t get better.

The four manmade lagoons are mostly sheltered from rough surf making it perfect for everyone, keiki included. Swimming here is also easy because the Marriott folks have nicely cleared away all sharp volcanic rock from the ocean floor. Snorkeling near the rocks can be good—I’ve seen honu and lots of cool fish. No sharks, thank goodness.

One note: the parking is notoriously slim. I’d suggest getting there early or late (after 4 p.m.) in order to snag a spot. Also, immediately before the first lagoon is a large parking lot, but only the back is open to the public.

For directions to the resort, visit the resort website at http://www.koolina.com

Ko Olina by mcrjordillas

Watching a movie under the stars is just about the coolest cinematographic experience there is. Better than IMAX. Better than the new 007 on opening night. Here on Oahu, you can enjoy the Sunset Movie every month, broadcast on a 30-foot screen on Queens Beach in Waikiki. Local vendors sell food or you can pack your own. But get there before the 7 p.m.-ish start time, the good spaces get snatched up quick. For a schedule and more info, check out www.sunsetonthebeach.net

Also gratis is a daily hula show at Kuhio Beach, which is near the intersection of Uluniu and Kalakaua Avenues. It kicks off with the traditional torch lighting and conch blow, then it’s about an hour of local traditional dance. Make sure to bring your own mat or chair, it’s lawn seating only. Happens every day but Monday. Visit http://www.gohawaii.com/event?id=10549.

But the funding for this uber-cool activity is in jeopardy, thanks to declining tourism dollars flowing into our state, according to the Hawaii Tourism Authority. So take advantage of it while you can, or email the HTA to tell them to save the free stuff! www.hawaiitourismauthority.org

But thanks to a unique group here in Hawaii, our visitors are never alone to deal with life’s unfortunate events. A group called VASH—the Visitor Aloha Society of Hawaii provides free assistance to those who’ve become ill or been victims of crime while on vacation to Hawaii. The group liaises with healthcare organizations, members of law enforcement and family members and provides the spirit of aloha to those visitors who need it most.

If you live in Hawaii, you also live in a bathing suit. For the ladies, that can mean 365-day-a-year Bikini Anxiety.

I’m your average gal with an average body and like most average girls, an ill-fitting two-piece makes me look ridiculous. Most bikinis are made for people who are perfectly symmetrical. So what does the gal with no toosh or a lot of junk in the trunk to do?

I went to North Shore Swimwear in Haleiwa and got a custom made bikini for my bod. It’s just so much more comfy to have everything perfectly contained and exactly where it’s supposed to be. I may not have the perfect body, but I feel a LOT better.

The locally-owned store can turn around a bikini in the style and fabric you want in 5 days, plenty quick enough for even a vacationer to take advantage of. And the fabrics are super cute.

It’s a mix-and-match operation, so you can try on all sorts of top and bottom styles until you find the perfect set. I fell in love with a halter top, but the neck was long. So, for $5, they altered the suit. And that’s a one-time fee, folks.

The two suits I bought (because I can’t just have one, can I?) cost about $85 each. That seems steep until you realize that the $30 suits you buy only get worn for one season. It’s like good shoes versus shoes from Payless. You get what you pay for.

For more info, visit http://www.northshoreswimwear.com

Sandy Beach (21°17′5″N, 157°40′20″W) is on the South Shore of O’ahu in Hawai’i. It is known for its shorebreak and for its bodyboarding and bodysurfing. The area is also known for its strong current and dangerous shorebreak. Unexperienced bodyborders, bodysurfers, and swimmers should stay out of the water. The beach park is located between Hanauma Bay Nature Preserve Park on the west and MakapuÊ»u Point on east along 8800 Kalanianaole Highway in Hawai’i Kai, on Honolulu’s southside neighborhood.

Enjoy the view and wonderful beach but remember to not let the beauty distract you from the danger.

So I thought long and hard about doing a writeup on the Iolani Palace takeover and well as you can see, I’ve decided to put it out there again. If you remember, it was just a few months back when we wrote an article titled “Native Hawaiians Take Iolani Palace“, after one group locked the gates and decide to resume control for the Hawaiian Kingdom Government. Well to no surprise it happened again on “Admissions Day”, the celebration of Hawaii Statehood, and after a recent proposal of new rules for Iolani Palace and grounds. This time it was a different group who also claims to be the rightful heir to the Hawaiian Kingdom.

I said earlier that I thought long and hard about doing this writeup because I read many responses on the web and social networks regarding recent events where some responded to people talking about it and basically said, no need to continue to talk about negative Hawaii things. So I ask, is this a negative Hawaii thing? I mean who is right and who is wrong in this matter? I sure don’t know the answer to that one, but one thing I do know is that if I were a tourist planning a trip to Hawaii, I would WANT TO KNOW that this was going on! I think I would be more upset to spend my hard earned money and travel all the way to Hawaii to then learn about the struggles of the Native Hawaiians against the State of Hawaii and the United States especially if it meant that it was going to affect my travel plans or itinerary.

I only wonder myself as may many others, who really is the Hawaiian Kingdom of today? There are so many groups who claim it, but yet it seems they are still divided. Just think of the power they would have if all the Native Hawaiian groups came together and combined into one body and fought for the same cause.

Now after reading this I want to make it clear that I’M NOT implying that it is not a good idea to travel to Hawaii, in fact right now is as good a time as any to travel to the islands and let it be known that although there may be ongoing protest from time to time, there has yet to be any violence towards visitors or residents. Yes some of the other bloggers and media gurus in Hawaii may not like to see this type of posting, but hey most out there don’t really regard my opinions or writeups anyway when it comes to Hawaii. I write for the love of it, not because I get paid to do this or because I’m seeking a social standing. WHO CARES! What matters is the now and what is happening in Hawaii.

I love Hawaii, I love the people, I love the Aloha and most of all I love telling others that this is indeed the most beautiful place on earth. As for the Native Hawaiian movement, I truly believe they have a great cause worth fighting for, so why not get the world involved to develop a global opinion on what should be done to gain recognition and therefore right the wrongs that the Hawaiians have endured, instead of just keeping it quiet and hush, hush within Hawaii.

If you got something interesting to share in regards to the Native Hawaiian movement or even the recent Iolani Palace takeovers that have occurred, please feel free to add them in the comments below. We can only hope that as Hawaii approaches it’s 50th anniversary of statehood next year, that recognition and rights will be restored to the Native Hawaiians and the Kingdom of Hawaii.

Hey it’s aloha Friday and also 080808 which means that at least part of the day is made up of the 808 and without it, there just wouldn’t be an 080808!

So what’s the 808 part we’re talking about? It’s Hawaii’s area code of course and what makes it so unique is that Hawaii is one of only a few states that still has a single unified area code. Maybe now you can understand what the 808 in 808Talk actually represents unless of course you’ve already read all about us then you’d know already anyway.

So let’s get back to the 080808 and talk about the significance of the number 8. Up until this week, I never realized how lucky of a number “8″ is considered to be in the Chinese culture. This might explain the reason that the 2008 Beijing Olympics is set to start on the 8th day of the 8th month of the year 2008 at 8:08 local time.

As mentioned in a special edition write-up over at The Honolulu Star-Bulletin titled “Celebrate Lucky 8!“, in Hong Kong, they try to get as many 8′s as possible in a cell-phone number or apartment number because it’s believed to be so darn lucky. If this is the case, then Hawaii has to be a lucky state and I for one think it is. We always say “Lucky We Live Hawaii” and now it really does make sense since our area code is 808 and of course we consider ourselves the “808 State” and now we know the number 8 is lucky.

So on this joyous and aloha of Fridays be sure and remember the 808 in 080808 and think of Hawaii and how you can fulfill your ultimate getaway of joining us in one of the most beautiful places on earth and becoming one of the lucky and fortunate to see the many things the islands have to offer.

We hope you enjoy the peek into Hawaii via the wonderful video put together by 2205536 which should get you wanting a taste of the 808 experience that can only be accomplished by being here in person.

With Hawaii tourism on the decline you would think that the Hawaii Visitors and Convention Bureau, the Hawaii Tourism Authority and the State Government of Hawaii would get together and think of ways to attract more visitors rather than drive them away.

Working with local travel agencies, going online with interactive new media such as blogs, video and live streaming events would be my first choices, but of course we are a new media outlet and thus we think in those terms.

When I talk about the driving away of the already decreasing visitors coming to the islands I am referring to the recent announcement that weddings on the beautiful beaches in Hawaii will now require a state permit before they are to be conducted. While it may not be a lot of money to pay for a permit (10 cents per square foot), it is another hindrance in the process and can take anywhere from a week to a month to obtain the actual permit after the application has been processed.

Why can’t we remove such a ban and promote the beautiful scenery for a memory of a lifetime. How many out there would be absolutely thrilled to have a marriage on the beaches of Hawaii if it was promoted as the premier destination for such an event because of the beauty, weather, Hawaiian customs and the EASE of use of the public beach.

Now while I do understand that many of the primary complaints relate to the use of parking for wedding members in areas that are already packed with beach goers, I still feel that there must be a way that these organizations and that the State of Hawaii can come up with better policies to alleviate the hardship of such a memorable life event.

Now I’m sure that this move was not intended as a deterrence against travelers to Hawaii, but in reality it sure has started looking that way. Rising fuel prices, the departure of the cruise ships in Hawaii, the increasing daily spending required while visiting and now PERMITS FOR WEDDINGS are making their rounds as the anti-Hawaii factor and causing many travelers to rethink their choice of visiting Hawaii. Unless the mighty tourism powers that be can come together and strengthen the allure of Hawaii, it looks like this economy that relies on tourism is headed for more of a slump.

August 1, 2008 is the start of the REQUIRED beach wedding permits from DLNR
