Hiking is abundant in Hawaii, from easy trails to more advanced trails, and is a favorite weekend event I enjoy doing to stay healthy and fit and to also get out and see the great views that only Hawaii has to offer. This week I take you to the top of Koko Head on the island of Oahu. What an awesome challenge and rewarding view at the top and just another one of those good things about Hawaii.

Next time you’re visiting and looking for something to do, just grab some water, sunscreen and a good pair of shoes and take the challenge to the top of Koko Head!

Koko Head is the headland that defines the eastern side of Maunalua Bay along the southeastern side of the Island of Oʻahu in Hawaiʻi. On its western slope is the community of Portlock, a part of Hawaiʻi Kai. Koko Head (at 642 ft or 196 m) is an ancient tuff cone that is somewhat dwarfed by its neighboring tuff cone, Koko Crater, with its peak, Kohelepelepe (or Puʻu Mai), rising to 1208 ft or 368 m. Koko Head itself has three significant depressions or old vents, the largest of which forms the well-known Hanauma Bay.

In this episode we sit down with 神田広美 / Hiromi Kanda in Honolulu, Hawaii and talk story in an exclusive Japanese 日本語 interview discussing her latest English debut CD release “Hiromi in Love” featuring the musicians of the Honolulu Symphony orchestra and background vocals from local Hawaii singer/entertainer Anita Hall. With “Hiromi in Love” having recently been released, Hiromi Kanda is already back at work in the studio putting the final touches on her second English CD slated to release possibly this fall or early 2011.

“Born in Nagasaki, Japan, where her parents owned a painting business, Hiromi Kanda was exposed to American music via the armed forces personnel stationed in the city. At the age of 8, Hiromi and her family moved to Osaka, where she developed an appreciation for many forms of music from Sinatra and Cole Porter to the Monkees and the Supremes. She vowed to become a professional singer and began working steadily toward that goal. At the age of 19, Hiromi auditioned for Japan’s popular television show A Star Is Born–an American Idol – like predecessor. Winning the contest over an initial two million applicants, Hiromi was signed to a recording contract and released an album that sold well. Ultimately, however, she put her singing on hold to develop her skills as a lyricist. It wasn’t until recent years that Hiromi decided, due to the respect and love she and her husband, Yusuke Hoguchi, shared for the great American standards, that Hiromi should pick up the mic again. With Yusuke serving as executive producer, as well as collaborator on two of the featured tracks, Hiromi began work on the recordings and video that now comprise Hiromi in Love.“

Take a peek into the new night show “Ha Breath of Life” at the Polynesian Cultural Center (PCC) located right here on Oahu in beautiful Laie.

Recently I was invited as a guest to a special “social media night” hosted at the PCC which allowed Hawaii bloggers and social media guru’s to get an up close backstage visit with the cast and crew of the new night show and then afterward experience it in all it’s splendor. I must say I was impressed!

Ha replaces the long running “Horizons: Where the Sea Meets the Sky” which had been in production since 1996.

By the way, prior to the backstage visit and night show experience, we got to kick it all off with the amazing PCC “Ali’i Luau“, which could quite possibly be called one of the best in Hawaii.

808TTV E.91 – CANstruction Honolulu 09

The 4th Annual Honolulu CANstruction Design/Build Competition was held today, August 15 from 8:00am – 2:00 pm at Pearlridge Mall, Uptown. This was an exciting six-hour competition led by AIA Architects, design professionals and engineers. Teams erected giant, carefully designed structures that were built entirely out of canned food to fit within a “footprint” of eight feet by eight feet, and as tall as eight feet. As they were being built you could see each structure taking on a form and design of its own. The canned food being used for the build as well as the canned food that will be used to cast votes, will benefit the Hawaii Food Bank.

808TTV E.89 – Wailua Falls

Today I get to show you one of the beautiful falls on my favorite island of Kauai.

Wailua Falls is a 83-foot waterfall located in Kauai, Hawaii that feeds into the Wailua River. There is a path to the bottom of the falls, but it is muddy, slippery and dangerous. Some hikers have strung ropes along the path, but officials come by every so often and cut them. In ancient times, Hawaiian men would jump from the top of the falls to prove their manhood. There is another waterfall nearby named ‘Opaeka’a Falls.

The Wailua Falls were featured on the opening credits of the television show Fantasy Island, which is why some refer to them as the “Fantasy Island Falls.”

808TTV E.88 – Mariners Ridge

Join us as we show you a view from atop Mariners Ridge via an easy hiking trail located just above Hawaii Kai right here on Oahu.

The entrance, which is located in a local housing area, is easily found after heading just past the Hawaii Kai Post Office where you’ll see the street sign for Kaluanui Road & Hawaii Kai Drive. Turn up the hill and continue to the end of the street, but be aware that there is no trailhead markers to alert you. Also official parking does not exist, but street parking is available at limited locations. Remember that you will be entering from a residential area, so be courteous and quiet and show some aloha since you are a guest in the area.

The trail is a nice easily navigable ridge trail that takes you to the crest of the Koolau summit with a nice, dry pine forest about halfway into the trail and great windward views from the top. This is the fastest and easiest way to the Koolau crest and a great choice for a family day-hike. It is advised that you bring water and an emergency cell phone in case something goes wrong or you happen to loose your way. Also try not to start too late in the evening where nightfall may set in on your return trip and if it looks like rain is on the way, try to get down as soon as possible or cancel your trip altogether to avoid any flash flood issues that may arise.

Ever heard of Makapu’u on the island of Oahu? Chances are, if you’ve been to Oahu or live on Oahu, then you have. But now let me ask you if you’ve ever heard of the Makapu’u tide pools or maybe you have and maybe you even seen it from the top of Makapu’u but never got the chance to take the trip down the mountain side to visit.

Well today that all changes, because WE take you there! Still it’s not exactly the same as experiencing it yourself, but let us give you a brief tour and then you can decide whether or not to take the plunge and dive into this adventure for yourself.

A few little tips we want to share if you do decide to accept this adventure.

Bring food and lots of water
Sunscreen or tanning lotion is a great item to have
Swimsuit, towel and maybe even a blow up pillow to relax on
Try not to visit if chance of rain – causes a huge waterfall down the mountain side
Have your cell phone. Not all services work – Verizon is good but AT&T no good
Tell someone you know that you’re going there – in case something happens
Observe the tide pools and waves – gives you a feel of what to expect during surge
On your way back up, just follow the spray painted orange and white arrows
Last, bring a friend and a camera – its an experience to remember

This unique occupation provided him a broad global experience and cultural understanding throughout the years having lived in Japan, Belgium, Italy, Kingdom of Bahrain, traveling to 26 countries and to include multiple deployments to Iraq.“

He has performed countless times throughout Europe and even for the troops in the battlefields of Iraq. His recent return to the islands introduced his music to live local audiences both on Oahu and Maui and further introduced his delightful soothing sounds to Hawaii.

In Waikiki at the corner of Kapahulu and Kalakaua, extends this beautiful jetty simply called “The Waikiki Wall.” It’s a favorite local spot that’s been around for decades and is popular for boogie boarders and the occasional jump off the wall. On July 4th we spent our day hanging out in Waikiki soaking up the sun and catching some of the latest action at the wall. While this is a beautiful place to enjoy some fun in the sun and a splash in the water, we CAUTION you that it is very DANGEROUS to jump off the wall and to boogie board here due to the shallow waters that surround the wall. In fact if you do take a visit to the wall, you’ll notice how the more knowledgeable locals wait for a wave to come in before jumping off the wall.

Despite the dangers it is still one of the best places around for some genuine ocean fun, so be sure and pay it a visit!

808TTV E.82 – Punalu’u Black Sand Beach

“Punalu’u Beach (also called Black Sand Beach) is a beach near Nā’ālehu on the Big Island of the U.S. state of Hawai’i. The beach has black sand created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. This volcanic activity is in the Hawai’i Volcanoes National Park.

Punalu’u is frequented by endangered Hawksbill Turtles and Green Sea Turtles, which can often be seen basking on the black sand. Visitors must remain 15 feet from the turtles at all times. The swimming area is very rocky, and it can be dangerous to swim. The beach also has a large amount of underground fresh water that flows in it. This fresh water is very cold and looks almost like gasoline mixing with the water. Legend has it that in the time of drought, the early Hawaiians living in the area would dive underwater with a jug to get their fresh water.

Taking black sand and volcanic rocks from the area is prohibited.“

808TTV E.79 – Hawaii Superferry Woes

So the Hawaii Superferry is at an all stop. Why? Well many are concerned about the EIS not being accomplished and therefore believe the Superferry should be banned from the outer islands. In Maui a Judge has issued a TRO restricting the Superferry from traveling there. On Kauai the citizens got together and staged an in water protest to block the Superferry using their bodies. The very first Hawaii Superferry arrived in the islands last Saturday June 30, 2007 and 808Talk TV was there to catch the first glimpse of this amazing vessel. Able to carry 866 passengers and around 282 cars maximum, this is surely going to be one of the greatest new ways to get around in the islands. Starting in September of 2007 local island residents can travel between Oahu, Maui and Kauai and in the near future the Big Island of Hawaii will be added as well. This truly is the H-4 of Hawaii.
