Its English name was given by British sailors in the 19th century, who mistook calcite crystals embedded in the rock for diamonds.“

“The Byodo-In Temple is a non-denominational Buddhist temple located on the island of O’ahu in Hawai’i at the Valley of the Temples. At 47-200 Kahekili Highway, the Byodo-In Temple is a replica of a 900-year-old Buddhist place of worship at Uji in Kyoto prefecture of Japan. “Kitesurfing, also known as kiteboarding, involves using a power kite to pull a rider through the water on a small surfboard or a kiteboard (which is like a wakeboard). Generally kiteboarding refers to a style of riding known as free-style or wakestyle where as kitesurfing is more waveriding oriented. These two styles usually require different boards and specific performance kites.

A kitesurfer or kiteboarder uses a board with foot-straps or bindings, combined with the power of a large controllable kite to propel themself and the board across the water. The sport is still in its infancy, but is rapidly growing in popularity. In 2006, the number of kitesurfers has been estimated at around 150,000 to 210,000, with 114,465 inflatable kites sold that same year.“

During the winter months and earlier part of each year the winds tend to pick up on the South Shore of Oahu in the Waikiki area. It’s at this time of the year that you can find kite surfers having some fun mostly around the Duke Kahanamoku Lagoon and Beach which is near the Hilton Hawaii Village.

“KÄ«lauea Lighthouse is located in KÄ«lauea on the island of Kaua’i, Hawai’i in the KÄ«lauea Point National Wildlife Refuge.

KÄ«lauea Point, a narrow, lava peninsula protruding from the northern shore of Kaua’i, was purchased from the KÄ«lauea Sugar Plantation Company in 1909 “for the consideration of one dollar”. Before construction could begin, a method for delivering supplies to the point had to be developed. Due to the lack of good roads in the area, the decision was made to bring the materials in by sea.

The lighthouse tender Kukui would anchor offshore and then dispatch small boats laden with supplies to a cove near the point. Since there was no beach, the boats would anchor to cleats cemented into the lava rocks at the point. A boom derrick, constructed on a ledge ninety feet above the water, would pluck the supplies from the boats and place them on a loading platform 110 feet above the water.“

Hanalei Bay consists of nearly two miles of beach, surrounded by the beautiful mountains behind them. In the summer, the bay is like glass, offering excellent moorage for sailboats, snorkeling, and swimming. The Princeville Resort overlooks from the northeast entrance to the bay. Many boats use Hanalei Bay as a departure point for summertime excursions along the Na Pali Coast. However, the surf is much too large in the winter to accommodate regular boat access to the beaches.“

“Waimea Bay is located in Haleiwa on the North Shore of O’ahu in the Hawaiian Islands at the mouth of the Waimea River. Waimea Valley extends behind Waimea Bay. Waimea means “Red Water” in Hawaiian.

Captain Clerke aboard HMS Resolution stopped at Waimea Bay on 28 February 1779. Clerke had shortly before taken command of the ship after Capt. James Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay on 14 February. Waimea Bay was the only O’ahu anchorage visited by the expedition. Waimea Valley was densely populated at the time, and the remains of a Pu’u o Mahuka, an important heiau (Hawaiian temple) can still be seen above the bay. Pu’u o Mahuka can be visited by driving up Pupukea Road and taking the first right through the cattle guard. A short hike down the hill brings you to a spectacular view Waimea Bay and the North Shore towards the Waianae Mountain range.“
