You may recall the recent article we wrote on the “Critical Mass” ride in Honolulu, where a group of bicyclist get together on the last Friday of every month for a ride to promote bicycle awareness and show their disgust over the lack of bike-friendly roads.

Since then, the focus on bicycling has increased in Hawaii, not only because of critical mass, but also because of the increasing rise in gas prices, the traffic congestion that is experienced throughout Oahu and the overall price increase in just about everything which is causing people to look for alternatives to saving money. This increased awareness has finally brought attention up to lawmakers and state officials here in Hawaii and prompted them to look at the old 1999 Oahu bike plan.

The original 1999 bike plan only looked at bike paths from Kahala to Pearl City, whereas the new updated plan is set to address bike paths islandwide and put emphasis on linking bikeways for commutes and connections with public transportation.

While it’s estimated that there are only approximately 2,500 cyclists on Oahu, it’s still enough of a percentage to put Honolulu ninth in a ranking of 50 cities and therefore calls for the city to stand up and become more bike-friendly! This number is only destined to climb as projects such as K-Vibe and Cycle Manoa continue to reach out to the community and promote cycling.

Read here for more information on how the City of Honolulu is working to become a more bike-friendly community.

You can help in the progress of Oahu’s bike plan. Participate in the Survey on Bicycling on O’ahu, even if you rarely ride or live in another state. Your input will help the “Plan” address the needs of our island’s riders.

“Makapuʻu is the extreme eastern end of the Island of Oʻahu in the Hawaiian Islands, comprising the remnant of a ridge that rises 647 feet (197 meters) above the sea. The cliff at Makapuʻu Point forms the eastern tip and is the site of a prominent lighthouse. The place name of this area, meaning “bulging eye” in Hawaiian, is thought to derive from the name of an image said to have been located in a cave here called Keanaokeakuapōloli. The entire area is quite scenic and a panoramic view is presented at the lookout on Kalanianaole Highway (State Rte. 72) where the roadway surmounts the cliff just before turning south towards leeward Oʻahu and Honolulu.

The Makapuʻu area is reached approximately 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) east of Waimānalo Beach on Kalanianaole Highway (State Rte. 72) or from the Honolulu side (south shore; Hawaiʻi Kai) travelling east along the same highway beyond Sandy Beach. The Makapuʻu Point State Wayside Park, a 38 acre roadside park, is about midway up the draw on the right-hand side coming from Hawaiʻi Kai.“

The Hōkū awards were created in 1978 by Krash Kealoha and are currently being presented by the Hawaiian Academy of Recording Arts (HARA).

The Favorite Entertainer of the year is voted on by the public. Ballots are distributed through record stores and radio stations in Hawaii a week prior to the awards. Members of the Hawaiian Music industry vote on all other categories except for the technical categories. The technical categories are voted on by local resident recording artists, studio technicians, engineers, producers, writers, graphic artists, liner note annotators and others with local recording credit.

The award ceremonies are broadcast on television throughout Hawaii. Some the groups and artists that have received the most Hoku awards over the years include the Brothers Cazimero, the Makaha Sons, Keali’i Reichel, Melveen Leed, and the Peter Moon Band.“

The beach has black sand created by lava flowing into the ocean which explodes as it reaches the ocean and cools. This volcanic activity is in the Hawaiʻi Volcanoes National Park.

Punalu’u is frequented by endangered Hawksbill Turtles and Green Sea Turtles, which can often be seen basking on the black sand. Visitors must remain 15 feet from the turtles at all times. The swimming area is very rocky, and it can be dangerous to swim. The beach also has a large amount of underground fresh water that flows in it. This fresh water is very cold and looks almost like gasoline mixing with the water. Legend has it that in the time of drought, the early Hawaiians living in the area would dive underwater with a jug to get their fresh water.

Taking black sand and volcanic rocks from the area is prohibited.“

It is the southernmost point of the 50 United States. The Ka Lae area is registered as a National Historic Landmark District.

A confluence of ocean currents just offshore makes this spot one of Hawaii’s most popular fishing spots. Both red snapper and ulua are plentiful here. Locals fish from the cliffs, some dangling perilously over the edge of steep lava ledges. Swimming here, however, is not recommended, due to the current. In fact, it is called the “Halaea Current”, named after a chief who was carried off to his death.“

The Waikiki Shell was packed last Friday night for the second and final concert in Hawaii on the Jason Mraz current tour to promote his new forthcoming album We Sing, We Dance, We Steal Things, scheduled for release on May 13th, 2008.

The night kicked off with a wonderful opening act by Paula Fuga, followed by Mraz making his grand entrance on stage singing “Rocket Man” and as usual adding in a bit of his fun personality into the mix.

One of the cool parts of the night was when Mraz asked the crowd to “make him stars” using their “cellular devices” as he called it, and when the audience answered the call, it was like actual stars were all around you. Of course the highlight of the night came when Mraz sang his popular “I’m Yours” and added in a touch of “Hawaii, Hawaii, Hawaii” and “Barrack Obama” which made the entire crowd go MRAZy!

At the end of the performance as tradition in Hawaii, the crowd yelled Hana Hou, Hana Hou and of course Mraz answered the crowd’s request and returned to stage to sing not only one, but two more songs. In the end he left the crowd with a wonderful message saying “find something you love and practice it, practice kindness and most of all practice gratitude.”

Mr. A-Z is truly an awesome singer, songwriter and performer. For those who didn’t get a chance to check out the concert, I hope you enjoy the small clips in the video that highlighted the night. Remember his new album is set to release on May 13th, so GET IT!

Blend together folk, jazz, modern contemporary rock, pop and alternative and have it fine tuned by our generation’s greatest Hawaiian slack key guitarist and you’ve got a “Different Game”, Makana’s 4th album just released April 22nd.

In a style that is unlike any other, Makana takes you away on a journey that crosses all boundaries and soothes you with an uplifting contemporary feel that is quite different from his previous albums, which identified more with the Hawaiian style of music. This is a true diamond in disguise and a precedent setting album that all should take notice of. Escape to another world in “Away”, experience a message that all the world can enjoy in “New Love Song”, and enjoy the simple melody of “Time of Being.”

“Different Game” is love, it’s peace, it’s serenity and everything this world needs to experience from music in this day and age. This truly is an album that every music lover should add to their collection. It’s such a wonderful gift from a Hawaiian musician whose name is actually a Hawaiian term meaning “gift from heaven.”

“In Hawaii, May Day is also known as Lei Day, and is normally set aside as a day to celebrate island culture in general and native Hawaiian culture in particular. While it was invented by a poet and a local newspaper columnist in the 1920s, it has since been adopted by state and local government as well as by the residents, and has taken on a sense of general spring celebration there. The first Lei Day was proposed in 1927 in Honolulu. Leonard “Red” and Ruth Hawk composed “May Day is Lei Day in Hawai’i,” the traditional holiday song. Originally it was a contemporary fox trot, later rearranged as the Hawaiian hula song performed today.“

“Waikiki (Hawaiian Waikīkī pronounced [ʋaikiːkiː]) is a neighborhood of Honolulu, in the City & County of Honolulu, on the south shore of the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Waikiki Beach is the shoreline fronting Waikiki and one of the best known beaches in the world.

The neighborhood extends from the Ala Wai Canal (a channel dug to drain former wetlands) on the west and north, to Diamond Head (Lēʻahi) on the east. The name means spouting fresh water in Hawaiian for springs and streams that fed wetlands that once separated Waikiki from the interior. Waikiki has long been a place of relaxation. In particular, the area was a retreat for Hawaiian royalty in the 1800s.

Today the neighborhood and beach are considered the center of the tourist industry in Hawaii, with an abundance of both high-rise resort hotels (including the Hilton Hawaiian Village, the Halekulani hotel, the Hyatt Regency Waikiki, and the Sheraton Waikiki) and historic hotels dating back to the early 20th century (such as the Moana Surfrider Hotel and the Royal Hawaiian Hotel).“

We talked before about Spam Musubi and even shared with you the Canadian Style Spam Musubi sent in by one of our podcast listeners. Since the annual Waikiki Spam Jam is approaching I thought we would revisit one of Hawaii’s most popular eats and show you just how to make one.

Now if I were a chef or an expert at making Spam Musubi, I’d just explain the method to you myself, but my method is probably not as good as that from an expert so we visit with Cooking With The Single Guy (Benjamin Seto) who originally hails from Hawaii but resides now in the San Francisco Bay area.

He has a wonderful writeup on the Making of The Spam Musubi that’s well worth checking out. While you’re over there check out all the other interesting recipes he has as well as local reviews of restaurants in the SF Bay area.

Now let’s talk a little about the upcoming Waikiki Spam Jam which will be held May 3rd on Kalakaua Avenue in Waikiki. The Waikiki Spam Jam is a street festival that celebrates the people of Hawaii’s love for Spam, a canned meat from Hormel Foods. In Hawaii, you’ll find Spam at all grocery and convenience stores, many restaurants and in most homes in Hawaii.

This street festival is great for all ages, as the event includes Hawaii’s top restaurants, two stages with free entertainment, and a variety of Hawaiian crafters. This is also a special event that benefits the Hawaii Food Bank, the largest non-profit in Hawaii that feeds the needy.

Colt Brennan, the star quarterback of last years 12-0 WAC Champion UH Warriors, was the only Warrior selected in the two day 2008 NFL Draft and is the first UH quarterback drafted since Rafael Cherry was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 1985 Draft. During the draft Brennan admitted to feeling “bummed” as he watched quarterback after quarterback become selected. When he finally got the call Brennan said “It was an awesome feeling, a really good feeling.” Four other Warriors signed free-agent contracts with teams today after not being selected in the draft.

“Former University of Hawai`i record setting quarterback Colt Brennan was selected in the sixth round of the NFL Draft by the Washington Redskins. Brennan was the only Warrior selected in the two-day, seven-round draft which was conducted at the Radio City Music Hall in New York City.

Brennan was the 20th pick in the sixth round (186th overall) and one of three Redskins picks in that round. The NCAA’s all-time touchdown passes leader (131) finished third in this year’s Heisman Trophy race. Brennan led UH to an undefeated (12-0) regular season and trip to the Allstate Sugar Bowl, the school’s first Bowl Championship Series appearance.

Brennan finished his career with a total of 31 NCAA records under his belt and the most prolific passer in school, WAC, and arguably NCAA history. He finished third all-time in career passing yards (14,193) and second in total offense (14,740) and passing efficiency (167.6).

Brennan is the first UH quarterback drafted since Rafael Cherry was selected by Washington in the fifth round of the 1985 Draft. Although a quarterback in college, Cherry played defensive back for the Redskins. Larry Arnold was the last UH signal caller to be drafted and play that position in the NFL (1970 by Los Angeles Rams).

The Irvine, Calif., native continues the UH tradition of quarterbacks playing in the professional ranks. Timmy Chang, the NCAA’s all-time passing yardage leader, is currently playing the Canadian Football League. Nick Rolovich and Dan Robinson were free agent signees for several NFL teams. “

Not sure of all the details behind this mural, such as who painted it and how long it’s been there, but I applaud the person who put in the time to create such a wonderful tribute to three of Hawaii’s greatest. If you have any additional details related to this mural, please feel free to share them in the comments below.

Waimea Bay on Oahu’s North Shore can be a calm and relaxing place to chill during your trip to Hawaii with the exception of the winter months when the waves can reach heights of 30+ feet. This is the home of the largest, most dangerous and most spectacular surf in the world.

During the calm summer months Waimea Bay is a playground of fun for freedivers, S.C.U.B.A. divers, and those who desire to jump off “da Big Rock” or “Jump Rock” - a rock that is about 30 feet high above the water and is perfectly positioned in the bay (for use at your own risk!). You can also find rock climbers practicing their skills on the cliff and in the dry cave on the beach. The Bay, as well as Three Tables, Pupukea, & Shark’s Cove are protected waters. The diversity of life in these waters is astounding.

Enjoy your visit to Waimea Bay in much the same way these friends did, but remember as mentioned earlier, if you’re gonna jump “da Big Rock” be sure and do it with caution!

“Critical Mass is an event typically held on the last Friday of every month in cities around the world where bicyclists and, less frequently, unicyclists, skateboarders, inline skaters, roller skaters and other self-propelled commuters take to the streets en masse. The ride was originally founded with the idea of drawing attention to how unfriendly the city was to bicyclists.“

Tomorrow (April 25, 2008) will mark the gathering of another Critical Mass (Honolulu) which will start at 5pm at the State Capital Beretania side in downtown Honolulu. Last month’s critical mass resulted in a clash between the police and cyclists in which an incident between an officer and a rider occurred after key roadways were taken over during Friday afternoon traffic. Police are hoping after their discussions with the group regarding the problems facing bicyclists in Honolulu, that this Friday’s ride will not result in another incident.

For those of you who commute in the downtown Honolulu area and have wondered what is going on the last Friday of every month, now you know. For the most part the riders that participate in Critical Mass are not out to cause any problems, but use this as a way to show their discontent with the not so bike-friendly city of Honolulu and to bring awareness that motorist and cyclists must learn to share the road. It’s also a wonderful opportunity to get out there and enjoy a ride will fellow cyclists as well.

To the motorists out there, remember next time your driving along in your car, be sure and keep a look out for cyclists and same goes for cyclists to make sure you look out for the motorists and follow applicable traffic laws. Let’s work together and share the road.

Take a look inside one evening from a bicyclists point of view. Whether you like the event or not, it’s perhaps a perspective the mainstream media often ignores.

It was eight years ago that the University of Hawaii Football uniforms took their first drastic change from the old Rainbow “Bows” uniform and logo to the new “Warrior” look and logo which caused a little confusion among island residents after knowing the UH Football team and their rainbow image for 77 years. Back then it was intriguing to many, disconcerting to others and infuriating to at least one, but today with the unveiling of the new Under Armour designed uniform, many were excited and pleased with the new look which will further distinguished the Warriors as a force to be reckoned with.

“UH Unveils New Uniforms

With futuristic mannequins as models, the University of Hawaii unveiled a new look today.

The uniforms are part of a breakthrough eight-year, $4.1 million apparel and marketing deal with Under Armour announced in February.

The jersey tops were black and white with green short sleeves and dark-green trim.

The pants were black to match the black tops and green to go with the white top.

Both jerseys have “Hawaii” spelled out on the front with the Under Armour logo on the top left.

UH trumpeted the deal as putting it on par with many Bowl Championship Series schools.“

My Review:

After taking a look at these new uniforms and those of the past “Rainbow” football team I think the direction that the UH Athletics is going in is a good one. The colors are done nicely and the keeping of the bands on the shoulder was a nice touch, although I did notice it is no longer on the legs as before. Also from personal experience with Under Armour clothing, I’m sure the comfort level will be much better than with the predecessor. UH needs to keep that nice strong powerful look and Under Armour was the perfect match to do just that. I mean even the “H” logo and Under Armour logo go together right? Well as new head coach McMackin said “every team has it’s own personality and this is the start of our personality.” I totally agree with you Mac! If you look good out there, you feel good which ultimately pushes you to do better, so on to the new season with some new uniforms, new head coach and new lineup. LET’S GO WARRIORS!

Captain Clerke aboard HMS Resolution stopped at Waimea Bay on 28 February 1779. Clerke had shortly before taken command of the ship after Capt. James Cook was killed at Kealakekua Bay on 14 February. Waimea Bay was the only O‘ahu anchorage visited by the expedition. Waimea Valley was densely populated at the time, and the remains of a Pu‘u o Mahuka, an important heiau (Hawaiian temple) can still be seen above the bay. Pu‘u o Mahuka can be visited by driving up Pupukea Road and taking the first right through the cattle guard. A short hike down the hill brings you to a spectacular view Waimea Bay and the North Shore towards the Wai‘anae Mountain range.“

Today marks the official “Earth Day” which is set forth with the intension to inspire awareness of and appreciation for the Earth’s environment. In today’s society there are so many options and resources available to us to help preserve and protect Mother Earth for generations to come. Recycling, cutting your dependence on fossil fuels;oil, coal, gas (which nowadays can save TONS of money), and going paperless for billing are just some ways you can help protect our planet. Other more in-depth options include, getting involved in outreach programs that protect wildlife and nature, creating natural wildlife habitats in your own backyard, and partnering with agencies such as the National Wildlife Federation and the U.S. Geological Survey. No matter how you choose to contribute to the cause, every little bit helps so be sure and do your part.

Here in Hawaii there is a lot of awareness to protect not only Earth as a whole, but also our aina (land), and one of the most recognizable organizations is the The Kokua Hawaii Foundation. The Kokua Hawaii Foundation “supports environmental education in the schools and communities of Hawaii and provides students with exciting and interactive encounters that will enhance their appreciation for and understanding of their environment so that they will be lifelong stewards of the earth.” One of the avid supporters of this foundation is none other than the talented Jack Johnson who headlines the Kokua Festival every year which is a benefit concert for the Kokua Hawaii Foundation. Putting together various artists and sharing tips to protecting Earth combines for a greater means of awareness to the public.

Check out some of the video links below of past visitors to the Kokua Festival and see what they set forth as resolutions to help protect our environment, then after that write down your resolution/resolutions and makes goals to achieve them. Things like commuting to work with others, riding a bicycle, and using your own reusable beverage container are ways you can help. Even washing your car at a local automated car wash rather than at home can help the environment. Bottom line is, there are hundreds of ways to put for an effort and kokua! Earth Day is everyday, not just once a year.

Have a Happy Earth Day…and spread some ALOHA while you’re out there today. Got a great idea to help the planet? Pass it along in the comment section below.

Alright, so you decided to take that long sought after trip to Hawaii, but instead of just staying for a couple of days or a week, you’ve decided to stay a month or maybe even three. There are many out there who do this very thing which is why vacation rentals are often sought after here in Hawaii.

Consider the price of $150-$300 a night for a nice room and then multiply that by 30 and that gives you what you would pay to stay at an average state of the art hotel here in Hawaii and that doesn’t even include tax, separate bedrooms, a full kitchen and the other amenities that you can find in a private vacation rental condo.

A vacation rental condo on the the other hand can range anywhere from $65-$145 a night depending on whether you are looking for a one bedroom or two bedroom rental. In either case you get the private feel of your own place for a short time during your stay in Hawaii, and over time save a little extra money.

So now on to the question: Where To Look For A Vacation Rental In Hawaii?

Here’s a few places that I recommend and have even used when helping out readers, listeners and family members who have visited Hawaii over the years.

VRBO - Vacation Rentals By Owner

Hawaiian Beach Rentals

ClearStay.com “Vacation Rentals You Can Trust”

VacationRentals.com

Craigslist Hawaii

Note: When searching out a vacation rental in Hawaii remember that there is a Transient and Excise Tax 11.96%, usually some sort of cleaning fee, and a deposit required to book the unit. Also make sure and read the info regarding smoking as most places now in Hawaii will not allow smoking in the unit or even in some cases on the property.

Overall if you’ve decided for a longer than usual stay, a vacation rental is your best choice to help save some of that hard earned money and make your Hawaii vacation more enjoyable!

At 808Talk we’re always looking for ways to “Spread The Aloha” such as supporting causes like The ONE Campaign and (RED). So once again we just happened to pull up another one for you, that won’t cost you a thing (except a little time and brain power). It’s called Free Rice and what it sets out to do is feed the hungry.

A friend of mine told me about it today and said you can test your vocabulary skills while helping to feed others so I just had to check it out. Turns out he was right! On top of that it was pretty addicting for me to challenge myself while seeing my bowl of rice being donated, fill up right before my eyes.

So the way it works is, visitors to the site are given a vocabulary challenge to answer. For every challenge the visitor gets right, 20 grains of rice are donated to the United Nations World Food Program. While it doesn’t seem like a lot, just think of the amount donated after thousands of people participate (Current: 26,662,277,870). The donated rice it actually paid for by sponsors who will appear at the bottom of the page as visitors are being challenged.

Pretty cool idea if you ask me and another way to send some aloha to those in need. Check it out and tell a friend!

“For each word you get right, we donate 20 grains of rice through the UN World Food Program to help end hunger“
